SINGLE REVIEW: Future Party - Murdering Time

Future Party emerges as a post-punk rock trio, comprised of John Godfrey, Stephen Sue, and Eric Myers. Originating in the eclectic landscape where the Midwest rustbelt converges with the Appalachian foothills of Western New York, the band underwent various transformations under different monikers until 2000. While Eric and Steve pursued music careers, John embarked on a ten-year sojourn in a Zen monastery. Reuniting in 2023, they unveiled their self-titled album on April 27, 2024, featuring the latest single 'Murdering Time.'

'Murdering Time' opens with a distorted futuristic intro, setting a tone that feels ahead of its time. Artistic vocals emerge, backed by an erratic, fragmented soundscape that weaves its way beneath shimmering layers of eclectic intrigue. It transcends the confines of a mere song, resembling a multidimensional tapestry of sonic exploration.

Nothing quite fits conventionally; the words feel off-key against the jagged backdrop, yet everything harmonises perfectly, akin to a captivating avant-garde composition. To some, it may appear chaotic, but to those who grasp its essence, it's a beautiful cacophony of irregular intrigue. The ragged backing vocals add another layer of texture and dynamic to the sound.

Listening to 'Murdering Time' feels like embarking on a voyage into the future, where an alien race has commandeered the music industry, using inventive and creative sound palettes to craft a sonic landscape infused with David Bowie nostalgia yet injected with a uniqueness that defies comparison. It's a curious and captivating auditory experience, inviting listeners to explore realms of sonic possibility previously unimagined.
