SINGLE REVIEW: Free the Cynics - I Wish I Was You

'I Wish I Was You' is a raw yet melodic, frantic punk-ish banger. Captivating with DIY riffs and pummeling, infectious drums, it roars with chaotic energy while also retaining a rhythmic beat, and vocals that, while raucous, have a stunningly harmonious tone that is both versatile and commanding.

Incorporating elements of catchy pop melodies, it pulsates with a punchy, attention-grabbing sound that's sharp while also intentionally underproduced, giving it an authentic, rugged garage rock aura.

The lyrics contemplate the idea of someone achieving more than they feel they should and being unsure why. They convey a sense of self-deprecation, as you interpret it, despite their achievements and seeming success, longing to be themselves rather than living up to others' ideals and perceptions. It's expressed in lines like "I hate myself, I just wish that I was you." I may have interpreted the words wrong, but it feels like an outcry for a normal life, where you can be you without needing to concern yourself with how others perceive you.

All in all, 'I Wish I Was You' is a highly addictive, insanely catchy, perfectly raucous, and easy-to-sing-along-to DIY anthem!
