SINGLE REVIEW: Avantzi Maverick - Yoncè
Avantzi Maverick experiences some serious "beer goggles" on latest single 'Yoncè' a nod to Beyoncè.
I normally shy away from rap as aside from CRB favourite Wilko Wilkes it's just not my thing but I like the more playful, less hateful tone of 'Yoncè'. I'm not a big fan of the drug references "baggies of blow", "I bake like a cake show" (although I do appreciate the analogy of the latter quote) as it's just not my vibe but otherwise the lyrics offer a fun look at how a few beers in every girl in the room goes from a six to a 10. With every sip resembling Beyoncè more and more. It shares the notion of how easy it is to fall in lust when the alcohol is flowing only to regret it in the cold light of day.
Avantzi had a great voice and I like the use of auto tuning and vocal effects to add interest. While essentially rap it's a more gentle version of the genre, infusing the melodic, groove based tones of RnB. It's quite an infectious sound with a nice rhythm. While not strictly my jam I enjoyed it, I'm not sure it's a tune I'd put on through choice but it's not one I'd turn off if it came on. I like the laid back energy and the smoothness, the songwriting is great as it encapsulates the less aggressive side of rap.
'Yoncè' has a likeable sound and some structured laddish charm. It's well written and well performed, if you're a fan of the seductive, sounds of slow rap laced with RnB I think you're going to really get the track in a way a guitar music fan like myself simply doesn't understand.
