Following on from his string of previous singles; ‘this song shouldn’t exist’ which became viral on TikTok in 2023, ‘january rain’, and ‘i’ll miss you (this Christmas)’, Ruxley, aka British singer/songwriter Rupert Blackman, now shares ‘what it is to love’ via [PIAS] Recordings.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, Ruxley says: “I became a father in 2020. It was as magical and scary as I ever expected. ‘what it is to love’ is a song written for my little boy.
It’s about discovering that unrivalled, unconditional love and all the fear and self-doubt that goes with it. It’s about trying to live and breathe in each precious moment as a parent as they fly by. It’s about realising that truly nothing else matters in the grand scheme of things except your family.
Finally, for me at least (having had a traumatic and troubled up bringing where giving and receiving love has always been a rather difficult notion) it’s about truly knowing what it is to love someone.”
Ruxley takes his name from a small place near where he grew up in Kent, though he is now based in the Netherlands. Love was what brought him to Amsterdam, where he started off busking in the street and selling homemade CDs, and eventually found success as the lead vocalist in Causes, who released a string of hit singles via [PIAS] Recordings, including the platinum-selling ‘Teach Me How to Dance With You’.
After Causes disbanded, Ruxley returned to the UK and began writing with other artists, including Callum Scott, Martin Garrix, JC Stewart, Bülow, Mae Muller & Sam Tompkins. When Covid hit he found himself swept back to Holland where he now makes his home with his young family. 2023 sees him returning to [PIAS] Recordings as an artist, with a batch of new songs exploring loss, love, and his most candid and authentic truths.
