Dundee Alt Rock Newcomers Reveal Details of Debut EP Days of Grey Released 7th June 2024
Hometown Release Show 6th July 2024 @ Beat Generator, Dundee
Dundee alt rock newcomers Red Vanilla are pleased to reveal the details of their debut EP Days of Grey, set for release on 7th June 2024 on all good digital service providers, with artwork and tracklist now available below.
Recorded in 2023 in Dundee with producer Kieran Smith (To Kill Achilles), the band say of the sessions for the EP: "We absolutely loved recording with Kieran, he’s very talented and understood what we were looking for straight away. Since the songs were 90s inspired, he asked us if we wanted him to record it so it sounded like it was from the era, but we asked him to produce it like a modern metal record as we love that sound and that's what he specialises in, so the drums and guitars sound huge and the vocals are crisp."
The quartet are also pleased to share new single ‘The Know How’ which is released 9th April 2024 on all good digital service providers.
‘The Know How’ follows on from anthemic lead single ‘All These Better Things’ which was released earlier this year to support from VISIONS Magazine, The Punk Site, Maximum Volume, The List, The Courier and more, the new offering shows a different side to the band’s multifaceted songwriting—a more laid back and slow-paced affair that builds tantalisingly before the dramatic release of the single’s towering melodic chorus.
Commenting on the single, vocalist Anna Forsyth says: “I remember while I was learning to play guitar, reaching a point where I felt I could start writing material of my own, and this song is the first one that came about. I actually wrote it about Ellie Rowsell (Wolf Alice), a major role model of mine, and how desperately I aspired to be like her. It’s really heart warming, because the know-how I reference in the song that I wanted her to ‘teach me’ back then, is all stuff I’m totally capable of doing myself now. I love that my lyrics capture various versions of me, so I can look back and truly appreciate how much I’ve grown and changed along the way.”
Despite meeting in a refreshingly old school way through a series of online adverts which the band felt was “the universe waiting to connect us all when the time was right”, Forsyth insists that it’s “not about the backstory—it’s about where we want to end up.”
As such, the Dundee newcomers are in the midst of an identity bloom. Through their impassioned choruses, and notably in the explosive finale of recent lead single ‘All These Better Things’, the band are striving relentlessly to bury the belittling opinions of any doubters, and flourishing in the liberty that their newfound inner strength has brought them.
“We pour everything we have (time, money, energy, and everything in between) into this band, and this band only,” says Forsyth of their fiercely ambitious work ethic and mindset. “Working day jobs to fund it all, and spending every spare moment rehearsing, writing, planning, preparing—anything that's going to help us get where we want to be.”
Red Vanilla’s densely, guitar-driven sound is elegantly wrapped in ‘90s inspired pop-hook vocals, and the band have been slowly and steadily cutting their teeth on the road over the past few years, gathering pace as they hone their polished radio-ready rock sound.
They appeared at Outwith Festival 2022 alongside Fatherson and Pulled Apart By Horses, and have also played shows with fast-rising contemporaries in Reminders, Beach Riot, and Redwood.
The band released their debut single ‘Embers’ in 2022 and have spent the past 18 months readying the reveal of their forthcoming debut collection of material, with forthcoming debut EP Days of Grey set for release later this year. A tightly wound and packaged collection of searing alt-rock songwriting, it’s certain to mark them out as a bold new Scottish voice to keep tabs on.
Red Vanilla will play a special hometown EP release show at Beat Generator, Dundee on 6th July.
