Norwich-based post-genre sibling duo PleasureInc. are pleased to return with the official video for their new single ‘What’s My Name?’
The pair have also announced a run of July 2023 UK headline tour dates in support of the single, with tickets on sale now (see below for listings).
A focus on modern production techniques on their new material brings the duo closer to the hip-hop realm than previous releases—early 2023 single ‘For The Fun Of It’ channels the punky wit of Beastie Boys, whilst tracks like previous single ‘Joanie Loves Chachi’ and new offering ‘What’s My Name?’ point towards Blood Orange and Frank Ocean as the duo embrace a softer, introspective side. A move from live drums to sampled loops inspired the track’s four-to-the-floor groove, pulling house music into the duo’s ever-expanding alt-pop cocktail.
Commenting on the new single, lead songwriter Jonny Silver (aka Louis Baker) said: “About 2 years ago, we moved away from our family home in a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere, into an apartment in the city centre of Norwich. I remember feeling gassed to be in a new environment, and wanting to christen the new gaff with a proper head bop to hit the ground running. Not having Kenny around to play drums encouraged me to seek out other ways of writing using drum loops and samples. ‘What’s My Name?’ is what came out."
"I still don’t really know who or what the song’s about tbh, I just wanted to capture that new city flat feeling yano? I like to write words and wait for them to reveal to me what's going on in my subconscious. When you start noticing the patterns in your writing all you have to do is hone in on that and let it take you further.”
“Honestly, I was slightly gutted about the prospect of not playing organic drums on this tune,” adds drummer Kenny Pleasures (aka Jesse Baker), “however, being forced into new writing practices keeps things fresh. Our music is such a melting pot of influences, so using samples more prominently in recent tunes like ‘WMN’ immediately allowed us to explore our love of dance music and hip hop, and move away from being just another indie band. Been there, done that.”
“We’d started DJing a little around this time, so naturally we were pulling from stuff we wanted to include in our sets—the likes of KAYTRANADA, Mildlife and Confidence Man. There will always be guitars somewhere in what we do, but I think it can be far more interesting fusing it with electronic elements. Shouts out to our boy Malana for co-producing and helping pull all these ideas together.”
The official video for the single is a prequel to the ‘For The Fun Of It’ video, and takes a look at brotherly love in a way that anyone with siblings should immediately be able to identify with. The visuals were directed by Mitch Forsyth, who says of working with the pair: “I’m here to expose the innate Cain & Abel-ism of PleasureInc. Their poisonous, diabolic hatred of one another. Their searing, feverous adoration for one another. We see it in visions of black and white and colour. They are combat eternal. We watch with morbid interest a pair of songbirds scratch out each other’s eyes, and sing.”
PleasureInc. is the genre-fluid musical brainchild of brothers Jesse and Louis Baker. Jaded with playing in indie bands, the Norwich based duo began formulating a new type of project in early 2021, creating music and visual content that reflected their love for hip hop, indie, pop, fashion, film and the 90s. Through their aliases Kenny Pleasures and Jonny Silver, the brothers project a playful perspective in their music, pulling sounds and attitudes from the likes of Blur, Beastie Boys, easy life and Tyler, The Creator.
PleasureInc. are a band who radiate personality at every turn—you simply can’t help but take notice, and it didn’t take long for fans across the UK to do just that. Harnessing the mystery of their brand, the brothers built a fast online and live following, selling out venues across the country, including a packed House of Vans performance alongside Joey Valence & Brae in November 2022. The duo have continued to build on this in 2023 with a UK tour and a slew of single releases garnering 100,000+ Spotify streams.
