(16th July) ODD LUKE is stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight with his incendiary debut single "Disconnect", released today.
The project of Glaswegian musician, songwriter and producer Andy Black - session guitarist and live backbone to some of the UK's biggest stars - ODD LUKE's sound reflects the dynamic energy and soulful echoes of Glasgow's rich musical heritage.
"Disconnect", the project's absorbing first taste marries influence from some of pop's most rousing shining lights - Francis and the Lights, Ryan Beatty, Christine and the Queens, 070 Shake, with further sensibilities drawn from ODD LUKE's long held love of hip-hop, à la Action Bronson, Mac Miller and Earl Sweatshirt.
Produced and written in collaboration with Stewart Brock (PRIDES) at Octagon Studios in Brixton, "Disconnect" was written about disconnecting from your phone, social media and escaping the mundanities of the modern day-to-day.
On the song's creation and its lyrical inspiration, ODD LUKE shared:
"I'd been listening to a lot of Still Woozy and Lil Yachty's INCREDIBLE 'Let's Start Here' album, which is perhaps where a lot of the inspiration for the overall vibe came from. Story-wise, I'd returned from a pint with an old friend one night, who had just had - what I thought would have been - a bad break up. His outlook on it really was just something you don't hear a lot. Positive, but essentially, he disconnected from his phone completely, from people who always wanted to talk about it, from overthinking things and just generally from the weight of life and social media, the news etc. Easier said than done - but the whole thing generally made me feel so much lighter. I'd also watched Fight Club again for the first time in years and my mind was blown in understanding it a lot more - so there's a subtle reference in there to trying to escape the mundane by disconnecting from the day to day. No Tyler Durden in this case though!"
Hailing from the vibrant streets of Glasgow, ODD LUKE has seamlessly woven together his musical journey into his own artistry - from his roots fronting indie-pop bands in his late teens, to joining Fatherson on various UK tours in their live band and most recently to the global stage, as Lewis Capaldi's touring guitarist.
Growing up on a staple musical diet of Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Talking Heads, as well as jumping both feet into The Strokes' glory days, his time since as a professional touring musician allowed him to develop a profound understanding of the intricate nuances that make music memorable, a skill that now finds expression in his captivating solo work.
ODD LUKE's music is a testament to the powers of authenticity, blending his personal journey with a universal appeal that knows no boundaries. For ODD LUKE, the journey is just as thrilling as the destination, and with "Disconnect" he emerges as a solo force to be reckoned with.
ODD LUKE's debut single "Disconnect" is out now on Verdigris Records.
