A bassist by trade, Chris Urriola fine-tuned his guitar playing and allowed his songwriting to develop in a stream-of-consciousness moment. A chance opportunity arriving at South First Sound in Brooklyn with his band Hollis Brown brought about an idea; “Let’s make this happen, Let’s make an EP.”
The takes were akin to an old Motown Session. The musicians-- all friends & past band-mates of Chris’ -- arrived to be taught the tunes, ad-lib and all. By the third or fourth take, the energy would be captured by Sean Walsh of The National Reserve and they would have a print.
That process was repeated throughout 2021 in a rare opportunity to harness creative energies and intention during an uncertain time.
Overall, 30 or so demos were created, and the feeling of choosing which tunes would make the EP was, according to Chris, “a luxury, a garden of creative energy.”
The 'Illustrator' EP is a collection of songs about identity, relationships, and the universality of loss, and features a number of collaborators, including synth players Allison Jones (CITYGIRL) & Edviq Lukyanov.
