Noise-pop indie band Tulpa to release debut EP on No Distance Records

Lo-fi indie-pop group Tulpa will release their debut EP on limited edition cassette via No Distance Records on Friday Sept. 27.

The Leeds-based four-piece make noise-pop with a sense of fun and experimentation, blending de-tuned guitars and sonic experimentation with sweet vocal melodies and crafted pop tunes.

Their music evokes classic indie acts such as the Pixies, the Breeders and Stereolab.

Formed in 2022, Tulpa initially began as a home recording project before branching out into live shows.

Made up of Dan, Mike and siblings Josie and Myles, the four bonded over indie acts such as my bloody valentine, Stereolab, and the Pixies.

“The brief was to be energetic and melodic,” explains Dan, who leads the songwriting duties, with singer/bassist Jodie collaborating on some lyrics.

He added: “Mostly the writing is done to entertain ourselves and we write music we would enjoy to hear ourselves. Guitar music is a labour of love these days given no one is really listening. Emotionally, I think we just wanted it to feel warm and feel a bit 'otherly' – like it was taking you into a space but I don't know where exactly. I think the songs are a lot of fun.”

The band recorded two EPs in quick succession – ‘Dismantler’ and ‘Vantage’ – and No Distance Records will be putting out both releases on cassette.

“We're really looking forward to having these tracks out in the world. We have been sitting on them for what feels like a while. I think the sound will suit the cassette well and it'll be a nice physical thing to go alongside our first release, hopefully the first of many,” said Josie.

“It's exciting to be working with a new label with enthusiasm for putting out really interesting music,” added Dan.

While ‘Dismantler’ is available on streaming sites, ‘Vantage’ will exist as a cassette-only release, giving fans of the band a special treat.

No Distance Records co-founder Owen Bennett said: “It was love at first listen when I came across the songs on Spotify. These songs are perfect for cassette as they sound like something that should be on the C86 NME tape. I couldn’t live in a world where these tracks didn’t get a physical release and we’re so happy to be playing a role in getting this fantastic band some more attention.”

The band will launch the cassettes with a gig at The New Headingley Club, Leeds, on Friday Sept. 27, before heading to London for a headline show at the uber cool Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes on Friday Oct. 11.
