(6th August) Bath/Bristol-based dream-pop risers Night Swimming have released new single "Five-Year Plan" - the final taste of the band's debut EP 'No Place To Land' - out digitally and on 12" vinyl on 27th September.

Continuing their swift ascent to becoming one of the UK's most talked about new bands, "Five-Year Plan" moves with a rare serenity; a wall of sound built from rich electronic string arrangements, haunting guitars - and vocalist Meg Jones' soul-stirring vocals and lyrics pouring out impulsively, reflecting unfiltered pain following the sudden, unexplained loss of a close relationship.

Speaking more on the inspiration behind new single "Five-Year Plan", Meg Jones said:

"Five-Year Plan is about the feeling of being dropped suddenly, without much explanation, by someone you were really close to. The words were written quickly and without a lot of conscious thought, compared with our other songs. I think this captured the honesty of the difficult emotions I was experiencing at the time.

Like all of the tracks on the EP, Five-Year Plan was recorded as a live performance to analogue tape. We recorded the songs this way to give them their own energy and movement akin to our live shows. There were minimal overdubs on “Five-Year Plan”, however we did experiment with layers such as double tracked vocals/harmonies, a synth bass and even some acoustic guitar to thicken the mix. In terms of the writing process, the track was started by Jesse bringing an arpeggio melody to rehearsal that he’d be working on, and it was fleshed out by the rest of the band to create the wall of sound that is heard in the recording. A few of us were coincidentally experiencing similar life events at the same time, in the middle of winter, which definitely impacted the writing process. The song switches metre from 7/8 to 4/4 which we felt provided a cathartic release to end the song."

Taken under the wing of British producer Peter Miles (Orla Gartland, FIZZ, TORRES), the band decamped the south west for Middle Farm Studios in Devon in 2023 to record debut EP 'No Place To Land'. Recorded live to tape, industrial rhythms are set against a colourful, atmospheric soundscape, with the band noting the influence of Beach House and Slowdive’s live shows for their "combination of sensory elements" and the resulting "deepening of emotional response".

The band's debut EP 'No Place To Land' will feature the previously released singles "Evergreen" and "Let That Be Enough" - the latter, a live video for which can be found here, recorded at Middle Farm whilst the band were recording the EP.

Allowing their collective love of film and scores to motivate them to create music with a cinematic aesthetic, Night Swimming invite the listener to visualise and to indulge their imaginations, with further influences ranging from precursors such as Cocteau Twins, The Cure and Radiohead to more modern contemporary inspiration in the shape of Wolf AliceJust Mustard and Warpaint.

Lyricist and vocalist, Meg Jones writes in semi-veiled autobiography, drawing on her own experiences, and the experiences of those close to her. In her teens, the lyricism of folk artists such as Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling and Ben Howard resonated with her, for their introspectiveness and sensitivity to detail. More recently, she has found inspiration in writers such as Daughter’s Elena Tonra, Robert Smith, and Lana Del Rey.

Night Swimming have been patient with their music and their craft - taking the necessary steps to hone their sound and live performance. On debut EP 'No Place To Land', Night Swimming have delivered a bold, ambitious, spectacular statement of intent and a sure signifier of a band set to soar to the very top.

This year alone, Night Swimming have caught the attention of a swathe of respected tastemakers including The Line of Best Fit, Dork Magazine, Rough Trade, The Rodeo, Notion Magazine and more. Elsewhere the band have received glowing radio airplay from BBC 6 Music's Emily Pilbeam as well as being added to the Radio X X-Posure playlist.

On the live stage, the band opened the SWX Stage at Dot To Dot Festival ahead of Picture Parlour, Mary in the Junkyard, Hovvdy and Wunderhorse, following notable dates supporting Coach Party, L'Objectif, The Orielles, The Blinders, Sad Night Dynamite, Automotion, Home Counties, amongst others.
