NEW MUSIC: Corin Ashley shares "Empathy Centre" on The Sound Cove
The Sound Cove welcomes Corin Ashley to our digital singles family with his latest concept single, “Empathy Centre”. A tasty slice of power pop goodness that channels sonic references to the summer of love with its crunchy/chimey guitar chords and, as always, Corin’s melodic bass runs – there’s even some backward guitar and a woodwind interlude complete with a wailing Hammond outro! Evoking shades of “Baby You’re a Rich Man” era Beatles, as well as a nod to the Kinks and Small Faces, “Empathy Centre” is the song the world needs right now!
Ashley has been a fixture in not only the Boston music scene, but also to the power pop cognoscenti around the world for the better part of 20+ years. A lifelong musician, Corin led Boston mod-pop heroes, The Pills, in the 2000s, as they toured extensively around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Over a 10-year span, The Pills released three full-length albums, toured and performed with The B-52s, Supergrass, Sloan, Nada Surf, and others. Corin has also collaborated with Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly), as well as musically aiding and abetting Martin Carr (Boo Radleys) on his album, The Breaks, and he was also the touring bass player for seminal chamber-pop band, Cardinal.
Corin has this to say about his new single: “It’s a concept single written and sung in a character’s voice. I imagined a government agency that measures and promotes empathy as a natural resource. It’s purely coincidental that I’m finishing it just as empathy is In increasingly short supply, most especially from the current U.S. government administration. “Empathy Centre” is also the last song I finished with my dear, departed pal, Ducky Carlisle, and it was partially inspired by me helping him with his struggles in the last few years of his life. There were a dozen or so mix sessions that got cancelled because “the Ducky ride was closed for repair”, as a friend of ours put it. He kept telling me to just go finish it with someone else, but I felt like it was one last sonic caper that we could pull together. In fact, I think the woodwinds in the bridge are the last session he ever recorded. After he passed away, Ed Valauskas at Q Division helped me add those to Ducky’s finished mix. I still find myself waving the flag for empathy, despite how that ended. I still believe it’s our greatest natural resource.”
