Multicoloured melancholy from The Eggmen Whoooooo! comes with the second single from wandering the Welsh garage-psych misfits, as they release their latest single, Eggman Vs Hellboy. As much a child of the band’s interests in the valve-lit studio craft of 60’s melodists as the slack, low-slung sounds of 90’s college rock forebears, the follow up to their June debut, I Don’t Care, sets lyrics of content resignation beneath its melodic rainbow.

Formed in a lightning strike of inspiration by prolific, remote South Wales-based keeper of various musical flames, Benedict E Frye, The Eggmen Whoooooo! finds members of kindred, Welsh musical spirits, El Goodo, Los Blancos and Trecco Beis, joining hands and overloading studio plug sockets in a display of unchallenged creative hubris. With nobody to please but themselves, yet in potentially terminal competition with their own record collections, the six-piece’s indulgence in sounds straddling sun-licked Californian harmonies and the torn-sneakered snottiness of New York punk makes for thrilling sonic schizophrenia.

With no small sense of fatalism wound up in the band’s lyrics, Eggman Vs Hellboy is an exemplar of their frequently emotive and occasionally absurdist upcoming debut album. Fuzzy Eggs, Please, released on Strangetown Records on Fri 25 October 2024.

Frye says of Eggman Vs Hellboy: “A slight twist on the eternal ‘I’m only human’ type of lyrical sentiment. Here the crux is slightly more extreme: I’m not a super hero, I’m just an Eggman Whoooooo!”

The single and its accompanying nine other album tracks were recorded in mountainous seclusion in Carmarthenshire with producer, Thighpaulsandra (Spiritualized, Tim Burgess). The Eggmen Whoooooo! is completed by Frye’s fellow travellers in sound, Gregg Boyle, Sheldon Advocaat, Thom Lett, Gwyn Ŵy and Sue Flay.

Fuzzy Eggs, Please will be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats.
