TAKEN FROM 'HER LIGHT' EP - OUT 21ST JUNE

L.A. based duo Mieu has shared 'New Spells', the new single taken from their debut EP 'Her Light', out on June 21st.

'New Spells' is a mysterious love song set in the city of dreams. The airy melodies and mesmerizing rhythms never completely hide the song's unsettling feeling of obsession. As singer Shelley Zhao muses over an unattainable love, immersive guitar layers fill the cinematic dreamscape. In the accompanying short video, the camera looks in on the privacy of a serenely melancholic hotel room where Mieu are performing. The hotel name “kodō,” which means “heartbeat” in Japanese, accentuates the realm of gothic romance. The song culminates with a mysterious narrator telling the story of a girl who has disappeared into the night... the words are familiar but distant, and we find ourselves drifting more and more under her spell.

The first single from the EP was 'Always True', a dreamy and reflective R&B pop song about a forever crush, accompanied by a video directed by Aldo D'Luna, filmed at the Line Hotel in Los Angeles.

Born in Shanghai and having lived in numerous cities in the U.S., indie chanteuse Shelley writes songs about people who have shared ephemeral yet profound moments. In 2022, she arrived in California and created her latest band, Mieu. “After ten years of playing underground venues in Brooklyn, moving to LA was kind of surreal. The atmosphere is so different and I was becoming someone new,” she says. A small collection of demos written with longtime bandmate and producer Chris quickly turned into 'Her Light': five introspective love songs that combine shimmering guitars and syncopated rhythms with a blasé elegance reminiscent of Hope Sandoval and Anna Karina.
