On 22nd February, 2022, Mark Lanegan sadly passed away at the age of 57. One of the greatest singers and songwriters of his generation. In a career that stretched over 35 years he left behind a legacy to be revered.
Lanegan was an artist’s artist. Testament to this is the gathering of his friends and collaborators for one night only at the Roundhouse in London to celebrate his life and legacy on what would have been his 60th birthday in 2024. All the more poignant as the Roundhouse was where he made his final live appearance in London. A city that took him to its heart.
Major collaborators from his career, Josh Homme, Greg Dulli and Soulsavers are getting together to raise a glass to their brother and celebrate the gift he left them all with - his songs. Joining them on the night are some of the friends he held dear including Dave Gahan, Chrissie Hynde, Bobby Gillespie, Alison Mosshart and Duke Garwood. With more friends to be announced shortly. Soulsavers are the house band for the night, with friends Troy Van Leeuwen, Aldo Struyf and a couple of other special guests sitting in throughout the evening.
Greg Dulli says: “What a wonderful night this will be. Singing his songs and sharing stories of our dear friend in a much-deserved celebration of his life and music.”
Mark Lanegan was a singular voice in music, whose deep, gravelly baritone became synonymous with the alt-rock sound of the late 80s and 90s. Rising to prominence as the frontman of Screaming Trees, Lanegan was instrumental in shaping the Seattle sound.
Lanegan’s solo career, beginning with 1990's The Winding Sheet, revealed a deeply introspective and versatile artist, his work exploring themes of pain, redemption, and survival. Albums like Bubblegum (2004), Blues Funeral (2012) and Gargoyle (2017) showed his ability to transcend genres, blending rock, folk, and electronica.
Collaborations also defined Lanegan’s career. He worked closely with Queens of the Stone Age, contributing to several albums including the seminal Songs for the Deaf. He formed The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli whose critically-acclaimed debut Saturnalia was released in 2008. Other notable collaborations include his musical partnership with Isobel Campbell, which yielded three much-loved albums, plus highly successful collaborations with Soulsavers and Duke Garwood.
Lanegan’s music was both a reflection of personal struggles and a testament to his own artistic evolution. His enduring influence, and the outpouring of love since he left us, testify to his place as one of alternative music’s most compelling and influential figures.
