Mark Eitzel has released nine albums as leader of American Music Club, the most recent of which was in 2008, plus double that number as a solo artist. The Guardian newspaper has acclaimed him as ‘America’s greatest living lyricist’, while Rolling Stone awarded him their ‘Songwriter of the Year’ accolade in 1992.
Founded in 1983, American Music Club released seven albums, with their third, ‘California’ (1988), included in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’. The group split in 1995, but reunited a decade later for two further records. Eitzel then focused on his solo career, issuing the albums ‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ (2012) and ‘Hey Mr. Ferryman’ (2017) via Decor/Merge, with the latter widely regarded as his strongest work since the 1990s. He has spent much of his time since then composing music for the playwright Simon Stephens, as well as working on reissues of American Music Club titles that are slated for release in autumn 2025.
