Marianne Leigh Drops Explosive New Single "Obsessed" Alongside Her EP Fix Me Up
Emerging indie-pop artist Marianne Leigh releases her new single “Obsessed” on the 22nd of November 2024, alongside her third EP Fix Me Up. Known for blending heartfelt lyricism with a pop-rock edge, Marianne’s latest work dives deep into personal stories of friendships, heartache, and self-discovery.
“Obsessed”, the focus track for the EP, stands out as a departure from Marianne’s usual sound, drawing on sonic inspiration from Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift’s Reputation era. Marianne describes it as a significant departure from her previous work: “The production is the most experimental I’ve ever done. We distorted the vocals, leaned into synth-heavy sounds, and avoided a traditional bridge structure, all of which gave the track its unique edge.”
The track was inspired by a dramatic end to a friendship when Marianne was 18. “I felt trapped in this endless drama, and it felt like this person was obsessed with twisting the narrative about me,” she explains. What started as a deeply personal, anger-fueled journal entry transformed into a full-fledged track, finding new life and validation after Marianne shared an early version on TikTok, where it resonated with many.
“Obsessed” perfectly complements the overall theme of the Fix Me Up EP, which explores obsessive emotions and the process of letting go. Each track on the EP represents a different facet of Marianne’s journey over the past two years. “The EP is about leaving toxic situations, whether that’s relationships or friendships, and the freedom that comes with reclaiming your narrative,” she shares. Songs like “What’s a Girl Gonna Do?” and “Box in My Brain” dive into these emotions, with Marianne tackling feelings of obsession over memories and unhealthy attachments. The EP documents her coming-of-age journey as she navigates friendships, heartache, and personal growth since moving from New Zealand to London.
Marianne’s growth as an artist is evident throughout Fix Me Up, with a more confident and risk-taking approach than her earlier works. “This project documents all the messy feelings that arise when going through breakups, moving away from home, and navigating your 20s. I feel sure of myself as an artist, and I’m proud of how this EP reflects my growth,” she says.
For fans of confessional indie-pop with a punch, Fix Me Up and its lead single “Obsessed” are not to be missed.
