Manchester Post Punks The Maddocks Return With Soaring New Single 'Ronnie O'Sullivan'
Having spent the summer captivating audiences around the north of England on their debut tour, which included a slot in the coveted Tim Peak’s Diner at Kendal Calling, The Maddocks have wasted no time in returning to the studio, and are back to grace our ears with their latest single, “Ronnie O’Sullivan”.
The track, which the band have revealed will feature on their upcoming debut EP (scheduled for release in early 2024), channels the energy and danceability of their debut single, paired with the darker, mysterious ambiance of their most recent release “If Anyone Can”, all tied together with a set of mystifying lyrics, an anthemic chorus, and polished off with an epic solo-come-outro.
The lyrics, and concept of the song, in true Maddocks fashion, are based off a magazine article the band discovered by chance when decorating their rehearsal room:
“We were going through our old music papers and cutting out pictures to stick on the wall of our rehearsal space, when we came across an interview with Ronnie O’Sullivan in a copy of NME. It was put up on the wall, and every rehearsal we would read it out and be fascinated by his answers to the questions put before him, which were mostly about his relationship with music; his first gig, the first song he ever heard, and so on. One day we decided it would be a good idea to weave parts of the interview into the lyrics of a song and name it after him, because, well, why not?”
While the magazine article, which is now framed and in pride of place on the centre of the wall at The Maddocks’ studio, was the basis for the song’s lyrics, the music, which incorporates a driving bassline, soaring guitars and wondrously booming drums, was heavily inspired by the sounds of artists such as shame, Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital; all of which the Stockport four-piece have repeatedly cited as great inspirations to their music.
The song, along with the rest of the yet-to-be-revealed track list for their upcoming EP, was written, recorded and mastered by the band at their Fallowfield rehearsal room.
