London’s premiere spooky folk-blues troubadours LOCKS release their highly anticipated  new EP, Tall Tales with the lead track JARS

Following a covid enforced hiatus LOCKS have returned with some of their strongest  music to date. The Tom Waits-esque stomp of JARS uses gory imagery, rattled chains and an unnerving staccato riff to conjure a feeling of an undead cabaret performing in a dimly  lit London club.

“I wrote it while wandering around Highgate Woods one day while listening to CocoRosie  & Tom Waits, so there's a lot of those influences on my vocals” singer Locks Geary-Griffin  explains. “The lyrics were inspired by historical witch trails, morbid nursery rhymes and the  woods around me at the time. We sort of see this song as (previous single) NOLA’s big  sister”

Tall Tales was written during covid and recorded throughout lockdown, a short 4 track  sampling of what’s to come next. The band have taken a slight side-step from murder  ballads and have compiled a collection of songs revolving around themes of deception,  betrayal, revenge and, of course, death.

The EP was recorded with Alex McGown at Space Eko East recording studio (The Future  Shape of Sound, Urban Voodoo Machine, Son of Dave, Jim Jones & The Righteous  Mind). The band describe the studio as a curiosity cabinet, or like walking into their own  collective subconscious. Strewn everywhere were skulls, taxidermy, old pianos,  unrecognisable instruments, thick velvet curtains and sequinned mannequins. The whole  place felt like a playground to the band and its off-kilter energy seeped pleasingly into the  recordings.

“It was so much fun, we couldn’t wait to just try different things” Locks says of the  experience. “Alex really encouraged us to experiment and let go of any set ideas.  Listening back we can’t even remember how we made some of the sounds on the EP.”

As well as new music, 2023 sees the return of LOCKS to the live circuit with the EP launch  party at The Finsbury on 5th April
