LIVE REVIEW: The Sherlocks + Ivory Wave @ O2 Academy, Leeds
Having arrived at the O2 Academy in Leeds a little later I missed the first support, but made it in time for Ivory Wave.
The Birmingham quintet certainly have plenty of confidence with frontman George Johnson swaggering around like Shaun Ryder from The Happy Mondays.
They also had a great stage set up with old CRT TVs displaying colours and words adding a bit more visual interest.
Their indie acid house is clearly influenced by 90’s hip-hop and, whilst not really my kind of music, they certainly got the mostly very young crowd bouncing along, which was infections and I found myself smiling.
Rescheduled from the original date of 1st November 2019 due to health issues, the Sherlocks took to the stage with Perfecto Allstarz - Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag) blasting out of the PA and the crowd trumpeting along.
The Sheffield (actually Bolton upon Dearne, Barnsley) indie quartet jammed along for a few seconds before launching into Magic Man.
What followed was pretty much an even number of tracks from both albums with new track ‘Wake Up’ being catchy and well received, I can see this quickly becoming a fan favourite.
The indie standard of “oooooohs’ and sing along choruses were all present, keeping the crowd pogoing along with gusto. The lads were also lively on stage moving around, jumping off the drum riser and genuinely looking like they were having a great time playing.
If it’s a sign of things to come then The Sherlocks will continue to attract bigger and bigger crowds.
