LIVE REVIEW: Destroys Boys Headline @ The Key Club, Leeds

03/03/2022

Support from Pleasure Centre

Every time I walk down the stairs of the Key Club I feel like I am apart of something secretive and exclusive and I think that is part of the appeal and why so many people return.

I made friendly conversation with ticket holders, eagerly waiting at the front of the stage, listening to some easy rock, or at least that’s what I thought it was, as the venue soon spilled with a loud chattery crowd that left no room to think.

Pleasure Centre made a dramatic entrance appearing one-by-one dressed in motorcycle jumpsuits of which took me by surprise, although added quite a unique cult vibe to the set.

The set started with a dingy synth track followed by a kicker of an opener, named “Opener”.

The guitars completely astonished the audience and left me impressed by the sheer amount of effects pedals used to create such unique sound.

I would describe this band as a mix of shoe-gaze, alt rock with a touch of punk.

Unfortunately, the blasting of the music meant I couldn’t hear the vocals so well, however, the pure energy coming from the vocalist was enough to praise.

I had a hard time shooting photos for how energetic this band was, which is actually quite a compliment. The crowd loved this warm up! Even packing up, this band still received a lot of love!

With only 437 monthly listeners this band deserves so much more! The singles ‘Disease Machine’, ‘Opener’, and ‘Blue (Bertha)’ are available now and I look forward to hearing and seeing much more from Pleasure Centre!

Anticipation swelled throughout the intermission, As staff set up for our headliner, the crowd progressively nudging forward with each passing minute.

Guitars thundered as Destroys Boys made their entrance, the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs, as they jammed their best opener of the evening.

Categorised as Hardcore punk, Garage Rock and Riot Grrrl, what all these genres have in common is noise!

And for this reason I could not make out for the sheer loudness!

Completely captivated by stage performance, I tried my best to snap some shots but it was very hard to keep up. A high compliment!

I most definitely commend this band for opening a pit up but most importantly reminding everyone to say safe and look after each other and pick up a fallen member.

I also give high praise to the band for also looking after an audience member that got overwhelmed. Any artist that puts their fans first are heartwarming and a good role model.

It was great to see both Alexia Roditis and Violet Mayugba at the forefront sticking their faces right into the crowd, the crowd completely in love with their engagement and watching Narsai Malik go nuts on drums was a thrilling over all experience! From California USA, I congratulate the success of Destroys Boys first headline tour in the UK and it was a privilege to attend their first show!
