LIVE REVIEW & GALLERY: AlienNation @ B2, Norwich

4th and 5th Aug

Once again Terry from AlienNation not only got a great lineup of acts, but he also done it over 2 nights, so a double whammy of great live music.

Cold Harbour UK (4th August)

Cold Harbour brought their unique sound of Grunge & Prog Rock to a lively crowd at the B2. Now being a fan of both genres especially Grunge, I really didn’t know what to expect, but have to say that they blended perfectly together. Despite Cold Harbour UK being the first band on, they put on a headline worthy performance.with hard hitting drums, heavy guitar and true grunge vocal sound, that instantly tells you that Grunge isn’t dead !. Will definitely look forward to seeing them again.

Hedra (4th August)

Hedra returned to the B2 with a performance that was like no other, having wanting to see these live for quite awhile now, it is easy to see why they are so popular with audiences. They kicked things off with a prerecording of ordering drinks from the bar, followed by a light hearted joke about how Beer & Bear sounds very similar in this region of the UK.

Then from out of nowhere the band were on stage and went straight into the music like true pros. Now while they are experimental metal, everything they done was to perfection from emotional vocals, right through to drums so hard hitting that you think that they would show up on the Richter scale. Having only previously heard their material on streaming services, it has to be said that their live performances are a must see.

Raze (4th August)

Hertfordshire band Raze were the headline act for the night brining a live performance to celebrate the release of their album Pyrography. Their unique raw sound of Grunge & Metal, with some edgy but technical guitar rifts and to top it all off the vocals from Frontman Louis, show that they are a force to be reckoned with and I can see them being billed at major festivals in the UK & around Europe. The passion put in by every member shows their dedication that not only produces a great sound, but also guaranteed to blow the roof off any venue they perform in.

The Mojo Slide (5th August)

Cambridge based band The Mojo Slide were originally due to be one of the acts at the cancelled Cambridge Rock Festival and were the opening act for the night. Their sound can only be explained as a mixture of Blues and Alternative which is not only quite unique but in reality worked really well. However upon speaking to the drummer of the band, he said they classed themselves as Filthy Blues. Upon hearing them for the first time, I found them to have the catchy Bluesy rifts, and Rock vocals that provided an edgy blues & Alternative Rock sound.

Eliza Delf & The Wilderness Collective (5th August)

Having recently sold out the Norwich Arts Centre, Eliza Delf & The Wilderness Collective gave one of the most elegant performances that I have ever seen. Their unique sound of calm guitar rifts, a soft Cello and Eliza’s calm beautifully sung vocals gave a mixture of Folk & Contemporary, with a Kate Bush feel to them. Every song sounded amazing along with a cover of White Rabbit which was pitch perfect and showed true respect to the original.

I was able to speak to Eliza after her performance and like her performance she was elegant and gracious to everyone that spoke to her. It is easy to see that Eliza Delf & The Wilderness Collective are stars in the making.

Spriggan Mist (5th August)

The headline act tonight was Spriggan Mist from Cambridge, another bad which was due to play at the cancelled Cambridge Rock Festival. Right from the moment they got on stage in tribal outfits, you just knew you were in for a treat. Their sound is of a Folk Rock nature with similarities to early recordings from Fleetwood Mac, but with some new age tranquil sounds added in. The powerful vocals from Fay, blended in perfectly.

During the performance Baz, shared some humorous backstories on certain songs, which was a nice touch. One of the highlights of their performance were the Tribal Dancers that came out onto the floor with these massive blades, and then went onto balance the blades on their heads. During the performance the Tribal dancers started encouraging audience members to dance, which was something you just don’t see at a gig, so was an extra nice touch.

If you ever get the chance to see Spriggan Mist, then do so, as they add so many nice touches and something different to a very competitive industry.

John

John (46) published photographer from Norwich.  Lives for the thrill of the live music scene.  When not doing gig photography, I go to nature reserves for wildlife.  When not doing photography, I scream blue murder at the tv while watch the football (which isn’t difficult when you are a Liverpool fan).  I also love to travel and have been blessed with seeing different parts of the world.  I only have one rule in life and that is, no matter if I am travelling or editing, music is always played.
