Chaos Magic out November 17th via Weird World
Winter UK & European tour includes date at London’s Two Palms 22nd November

Following the release of “Palace In My Head”, his electro-pop duet with the actress and singer Alma Jodorowsky, today Jaakko Eino Kalevi releases the heartfelt ballad “Drifting Away”. His new double-album of elemental pop and baroque electronics, Chaos Magic, is out November 17th via Weird World.

Leading with a memorable vocal from Jaakko, “Drifting Away” is a feel-good cut laced with a pulsing groove and dreamy saxophone played by Finnish maestro Jimi Tenor (Tony Allen). Casually compelling, Jaakko plays it straight as he sings from the heart. “Missing someone is the most romantic thing, and this is a romantic song,” says Jaakko. ”It started out as an ancient jam we once had at a rehearsal place a long time ago, but this one had certain elements that stuck in my mind and I knew I’d use them in a song one day.”

Shot by Frank Holbein, the accompanying video, filmed on MiniDV for its nostalgic, hyper-real quality, features Jaakko’s band and a seaside promenade that captures the carefree nature of the song and its sense of yearning. "The original idea for the video was to shoot it on a yacht like in ‘Rio’ by Duran Duran,” Jaakko comments. “We were all set but then Storm Elias raged over the sea and we had to figure out something else. The song is about longing so I thought it could be more about dreaming about sailing. My sister was visiting and wanted to go to a beach, so we made up a story based on that and shot by the sea.”

Largely written and recorded in his new home of Athens, Chaos Magic plots a thrilling course through the Jaakko universe, drawing on cosmic jazz, dub reggae, neon synthpop, tender ballads and space-rock nirvana. It features musical contributions from Jimi Tenor, Faux Real, Yu-Ching Huang and John Moods.

Stylistically, the album covers a lot of ground, from the ice-cool new-wave of “I Forget” and delirium of “Dino’s Deo” to the evocative disco of “Galactic Romance” and “Night Walk”. Taking shape over the past two years, initial demos for the album were made at various spots across Europe – at artist residencies in Geneva and Maajaam, Estonia, and in studios in Berlin and the Greek island of Hydra – before being developed in Athens at Mutual Sound Studios, a place close to Jaakko’s heart, run by his friend Teemu Takatalo, who co-produced and mixed Chaos Magic alongside Jaakko.

An album very much founded in the beauty of collaboration and, in Jaakko’s words, “a ‘back to the roots’ album”, Chaos Magic “is a collection of songs from a certain period without trying to tie them together”. Inspired by his new home and the Greek word kháos, “meaning an abyss or void that was created when Earth and Heaven were separated”, the eclectic, wondrous sounds of the album find beauty in the chaotic nature of the everyday.

Welcome to Jaakko Eino Kalevi’s garden of earthly delights!
