Highwayves to release new single ‘Things Could Be Worse’ on June 30th
THINGS COULD BE WORSE
30th June 2023 (COMING SOON)
With flowing, spoken word verses that John Cooper Clarke would be jealous of and an explosive, driving chorus, ‘THINGS COULD BE WORSE’ is more than a worthy follow-up to HIGHWAYVES’ label debut.
Inspired by bands such as The Cribs and Fontaines DC, ‘THINGS COULD BE WORSE’ rants about the life expected of us: the perfect job, family, house. Lead singer and lyricist, Brad dissects how his future may look if we went down that path instead of following his passion.
Nothing expresses this frustration more than perhaps, the fantastic artwork created by ADFAIL (The Amazons, Calvin Harris); a collage created from people in a moment of inner turmoil that one would never show outwardly. Featuring samples from vintage 80s alarm clocks and mastered by Robin Schmidt at 24-96, this unique track is sure to be one of the alternative must-listens of the year!
BIO
HIGHWAYVES (HWYVES) are an artistic collective that have crafted a sound that races from spacious to suffocating, combining the dark aggression of grunge with dreamlike washes reminiscent of shoe-gaze. Each piece is punctuated with intimate, poetic lyrics that are as personal as they are universal. HIGHWAYVES are unashamedly earnest, laying bare their deepest emotions for all to join in collective catharsis.
HIGHWAYVES take an obsessive approach to their art; writing, recording and producing their own music as well as writing, directing and editing their videos. Their uncompromising approach is the key to creating a deep connection with their audience.
I WANNA BE CONTROLLED
19th May 2023 (OUT NOW)
‘I WANNA BE CONTROLLED’ is about being bombarded by modernity, an expression of exasperation at the complexities of living and a desire for simplicity.
Heavily inspired by shoegaze and grunge music, in particular the likes of Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine, the track is punctuated by experimental and soundscape elements throughout such as reverse vocals and manipulated samples. The lyrics were written as a stream of consciousness, only taking 15 minutes to finish: a testament to the catchy, daring melodies heard on ‘I WANNA BE CONTROLLED’.
