The compilation celebrates fifty years since the Yellow Magic Orchestra legend’s iconic solo debut album, and sees musicians from the Stones Throw roster and beyond offer up their own interpretations of Hosono’s songs.
Kirby’s tribute comes full circle: he typically includes a Yellow Magic Orchestra cover in his live sets, and Hosono has been a major inspiration throughout his career. For this version of “Fuku Wa Uchi Oni Wa Soto”, John enlisted Japanese model/actress Kiko Mizuhara and her sister, DJ/model Yuka, to sing vocals. In the music video, shot by Luke Casey in Japan and L.A., the sisters sing at a karaoke bar with a host of colorful characters, while John plays the role of the karaoke video star.
John Carroll Kirby’s most recent album for Stones Throw was 2023’s Blowout. He goes on tour with Khruangbin this May and June across the US.
Born 1947 in Tokyo, Haruomi (or Harry) Hosono is a founding member of influential folk rock act Happy End and pioneering electronic trio Yellow Magic Orchestra. Inspired by James Taylor, Hosono chose to record his solo debut album Hosono House in seclusion in a U.S. Army house in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture.
The album’s blend of folk, country, calypso, funk and novelty songs still sounds as fresh as it did in 1973. The impact of Hosono House stretches far beyond Japan, and received an unexpected surge of interest when Harry Styles cited it as a leading inspiration for his Grammy Award-winning album Harry’s House.
To celebrate 50 years since the album’s release, Stones Throw Records is releasing a compilation of covers of Hosono House in partnership with KAKUBARHYTHM & Bayon Production in Japan. The compilation will be available on vinyl and digital later in 2024, date to be announced. Participating artists include Mac DeMarco, Sam Gendel, Jerry Paper, Pearl & The Oysters, Cornelius, Akiko Yano, Yuma Abe, mei ehara, rei harakami, Kukuku (Ikuko Harada & Manami Kakudo), and more.
