Ireland’s alternative emo darlings Greywind (brother sister duo Steph and Paul O’Sullivan) continue their intense storytelling return with impactful new single ‘Swing and Sway’, ahead of their tour dates across the UK this/next month (details below). A deeply personal track, Paul says “‘Swing and Sway’ is about me watching Steph be suicidal and in a dark place, and how that affected me. Wondering how I can help her, while also acknowledging the toll it was taking on me to watch her go through that.”

The past six years have been somewhat of a music industry rollercoaster for Greywind but they’ve channeled everything they’ve experienced into a collection of visceral tracks, which are primed to set the internet ablaze, following a viral surge amongst the duo’s music and online creativity. Jointly produced by Sam Guaiana (Neck Deep, Silverstein, Like Pacific, Intervals) and The Wonder Years guitarist Casey Cavaliere, ‘Swing and Sway’ follows the release of the deeply cathartic ‘Antidote’. This comeback track enjoyed BBC Radio 1 play on The Indie Show and Future Alternative, as well as rotation from Kerrang! Radio Fresh Blood and inclusion in the Kerrang! mag weekly chart with Hot Press proclaiming “It’s a high-energy, guitar-heavy banger channelling the likes of early Paramore that demands to be jumped to” and Brooklyn Vegan concurring “It’s a glossy, energized pop punk anthem with a pretty huge chorus.” ‘Antidote’ was also added into heavy rotation on Sirius XM faction punk, making a splash across the pond in the US as well.

The siblings leaned on each other through all their turbulent times and have now emerged triumphantly on the other side of that long, dark tunnel with their best ever songs in hand. They capture the exasperation, weariness and anxiety of what they’ve been through, and detail the band’s brave defiance in the face of adversity. Ultimately, although things hadn’t gone to plan at all with their debut record, Greywind today wouldn’t change a thing. After all, we’re the sum of our experiences, and had they not gone through all of that, these new songs wouldn’t exist.

Born out of an immense period of frustration, ‘Antidote’ and ‘Swing and Sway’ are unforgiving blasts of anthemic emotion that build on the band’s foundations while also pushing things forward sonically and emotionally. Mastered by Mike Kalajian (Saosin, All Time Low, New Found Glory, Circa Survive), the tracks give a taste of what to expect from the band going forward. ‘Antidote’ is a biting dose of catharsis that uses the familiar lure of revenge as a creative fuel, delivering the band’s darkest conflicting thoughts amidst their largest pop-driven choruses to date. And while ‘Swing and Sway’ starts off with the unassuming strum of an acoustic guitar - seemingly reminiscent of Irish royalty The Cranberries - it soon slaps you in the face with a head-nodding crescendo of epic alternative emo-grunge proportions. Impressively, these two songs capture the band both as they are now and were then, past and present colliding to devastating effect. More importantly, they’re a powerful testament to how they’ve banded together to get through it all, and found strength in themselves, each other and their fans along the way.
