Grace Calver set to release debut EP “my life and its disasters” on April 14th
I am a 19 year old singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist from East Anglia and have been playing my live set of original songs for just over 2 years. This has included supporting Alfie Templeman in Cambridge in October on his UK tour and Toploader/Liberty X at Trinity Park, Ipswich in November.
I write tongue-in-cheek indie pop songs with lyrics that I hope are relatable and entertaining, about my life and its disasters, including social media, bad flirting and failed relationships.
My EP has five tracks, three previously released singles plus two brand new songs and now they are all available on one CD! (And all digital platforms too)
Zombie Conversations was my debut single, released in February 2022 and was written during lockdown about those dead “zombie” conversations I was having on social media. This song has reached 27k streams and the live version recorded for BBC Introducing in Suffolk has been featured on the national BBC social media.
Bored Of U, my second single was written about some guy who really upset me! Boo! And often gets that reaction when I play it live!
Read Your Mind is the first of the new tracks. It is about getting mixed signals from the person you’re dating and how it would be good to know what they’re thinking. Or would it? I wrote this song after being on a date with someone who got a text from their ex whilst we were out! They replied as well! There was surprisingly no second date and the reference made it to these lyrics.
Addicted is my most recent single and is about having a slightly obsessive crush on someone! Maybe it’s not healthy but can we help it?
The final track is another new one called For Dead, it details those missed opportunities we’ve all had. We’ve not followed up the slightly flirty conversation we’ve had in the queue for a coffee, or asked the person we’re talking to online out on a date! We let them get away and should we chase them or leave it? What could have been if I was a bit braver and a bit better at flirting!
My influences across the EP include Beabadoobee, Baby Queen, Alvvays, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Declan McKenna, Dylan, The Cure and Mitski. Depending on what track you’re listening to of course!
I play guitars, bass and piano/keys on the EP and Oscar Liddiard did the drums on all five tracks. Tracks 1, 2 and 4 were recorded and produced by Jake Day, tracks 3 and 5 by Karl Younger. All tracks were mixed and mastered by Jake Day at Northacre Studio. The art work was designed by Lee Thomas and included a photo taken by my mum in my living room.
I have been supported by BBC Introducing for all my singles and was named as ‘One to Watch in 2023’ by BBC Introducing Suffolk. I also had my first 3 singles played across BBC Suffolk, BBC Essex, BBC Norfolk and BBC Cambridgeshire as well as Amazing Radio UK and USA with Charlie Ashcroft.
I am very honoured to have been included in the East Anglian Daily Times list, of 30 inspiring people under 30 for 2022 and named as one of their 5 artists to watch in 2023. I won the Female Solo category at the NMG Awards (New Music Generator) covering Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in 2022.
I have had support slots across East Anglia in 2022, plus London, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire including with Plastic Mermaids, Gemma Rogers, Freya Beer and Thomas Nicholas (from the American Pie movies) on his UK tour.
I have live appearances coming up this year including at Foodies Festivals in London, Norwich and Chelmsford, The Suffolk Show, First Light Festival and of course the recently announced support slots for Leah Weller’s UK tour in Brighton and Birmingham in September.
