Fresh from a return to Glastonbury this year playing a run of six sets, Finnish five-piece Us announce their debut album Underground Renaissance (20th September via Krautpop!). Us cemented their reputation as a fierce live band throughout 2023 with MOJO describing their blistering set at last year’s Glastonbury as “Dr. Feelgood-style punk-blues with the vigour of peak Ramones” with other reviews making comparisons to The Hives and early Arctic Monkeys, and strong early radio support from John Kennedy (Radio X) and Huw Stephens (BBC 6 Music). Us’ debut album Underground Renaissance effortlessly matches the band’s live energy, capturing the exuberance of youth and offering a snapshot of their experiences as young, modern men touring the world, whilst taking influence from yesteryear musical greats.
New single ‘Hop on a Cloud’ (out today) takes influence from Smokey Robinson and Canadian artist Tobias Jesso Jr. whilst recalling The Kinks’ quirky 1960s pop. The video was shot across London and snowy Helsinki, the former location apt for the song’s London-conception, dreamt up whilst on the underground daydreaming of clouds and recorded at The Libertines’ The Albion Rooms, Margate. The video was shot on Super 8 film and its grainy retro feel recalls the charming yesteryear era of The Monkees, but frontman Teo Hirvonen explains “We wanted to use film, not to look retro but because everything on our social media feed, TV and cinema looks very digital, stuff shot on film look much more beautiful or somehow more emotional.”
