Today, three-piece experimental band Potato share a new single ‘Irène’s Night In’, out now via Mookin Records.
The track is taken from the East London independent label’s new compilation album, Irène, which is released on 27th October 2023.
The song draws from the band’s broad musical influences, weaving together elements of post-rock and jazz. Lead singer and guitarist Bob Corduroy says: “The track was written especially for Irène, a conceptual compilation, and explored feelings of isolation, loneliness and consequential Wilson-esque delusion in a world of her own making. It was recorded as a full band performance as Irène would have liked and mixed by Mike Collins.”
The trio, thriving in the vibrant UK musical landscape spanning London and Margate, consists of Bob Corduroy (vocals, guitar, keys, clarinet), Matt Wildman (bass, guitar, synth) and Sam Zissou (drums). Collectively, they craft a distinctive musical style that blurs the lines between genres.
Drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of sources, Potato weaves together elements of post-rock and jazz, resulting in a captivating fusion that defies categorisation. Their musical influences, ranging from Good Morning and Happiness to legendary acts like King Crimson and Philip Glass, imbue their sound with a fascinating depth and complexity.
The band's artistic expression resonates with listeners on a profound level, delving into themes of introspection and vulnerability. Their lyrics explore the intricacies of human emotions, addressing topics of insecurity, self-doubt, and the inevitable encounters with failure—but amidst the introspective musings also lies joy, a reserved euphoria rooted in the simplest things.
Formed in 2020, Potato emerged as a response to tumultuous times, harnessing the power of music as both a cathartic outlet and a means of connection. Their synergy as a band is evident not only in their complex compositions but also in their stage presence, captivating audiences with their melodic noise and intricate time signatures. They quickly made their mark within the London indie scene, playing in renowned venues like The Shacklewell Arms, Paper Dress Vintage. The George Tavern and Sebright Arms. In doing so, they’ve successfully cultivated a fervent fan base to their one-of-a-kind sound.
Potato’s single is a first taste of Mookin’s new concept compilation album, which tells the story of Irène, who has been trapped in a record and only exists when it is being played; she haunts it. Each track on the album expresses what Irène is processing whilst she comes to terms with her entrapment. If you listen closely to the LP version, you’ll hear Irène whisper, calling for the listeners’ help to escape from limbo.
Irène comes on the heels of Mookin’s first concept album, Otto’s, a collection of songs recorded at the eponymous East London bar that now shut down. Otto’s was not a particularly popular pub but sometimes a place where, unexpected, great things happened, with Mookin dusting off some of the old recordings from the pub’s live nights for the release.
