EP REVIEW: Yours Truly - is this what i look like?

Yours Truly are an Alt Rock 4 piece from Sydney, Australia. Their debut EP "Too Late For Apologies" was released in 2017 however it wasn't until 2019's "Afterglow" EP that they truly established themselves. They have released one full length album "Self Care" which came out in 2020. The band have been releasing singles off "is this what i look like?" since July 2021.

The band have amassed quite the following with a very respectable 330k of monthly Spotify listens.

The "is this what i look like?" EP is an exciting deluge of frantic drums, thrashing guitars and fierce vocals. It's one of the best examples of female fronted Pop Punk I've heard. The melodic pop sounds and powerhouse vocals make it a captivating listen.

The whole EP is like one big anti love song talking about moving on, forgetting people and questioning if they really were who you thought they were.

It kicks off with "Walk Over My Grave" which is my favourite. It has some serious early Paramore vibes (back when they were actually good!) I particularly liked the lyric "I can't hate you but I can attempt to" The whole track appears to be about getting over someone and no longer letting them control your thoughts and dreams. It's raw and passionate with plenty of angst.

"Bruise" features Dr€w ¥ork. This one is super catchy and has been buzzing around in my head all day. it's a perfect anti love song and reminded me a lot of We Are the In Crowd with the mix of male and female vocals.

"Careless Kind" features gorgeous soulful vocals with a cutesy edge. It has fun bouncy drums, playful riffs and a pop infused chorus.

The 1 minute 25 second title track "is this what i look like?" is an unexpected fun little instrumental Drum 'n' Bass interlude reminiscent of Pendulum.

Another outstanding track on the EP is "Hallucinate" which features You Me at Six. This song served to remind me just how much I like Josh Franceschi's voice. It also features D'n'B elements as well as some slower paced aspects. The vocals work together magnificently and sound like a true battle of passion between the pair.

Penultimate song "If You're Drowning (I'll Learn How to Hold My Breath)" has a super catchy chorus with a high attitude verse and thumping drums. The lyrics were particularly thought provoking, they seem to be talking about making a person into someone they are not (like someone on TV) only to cause yourself pain. It's definitely one of the most hard hitting lyrics on the EP.

Finishing off the record is "Lights On" which is another track that sounds uncannily like Paramore. Lots of fun guitars, dance elements and big vocals.

I loved this EP. It's fierce and passionate whilst also being poppy and infectious. I highly recommend giving it a listen!
