EP REVIEW: Big Hug - Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time
I am obsessed! London's Big Hug are anthem machines! Debut EP "Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time" mixes big riffs and indie rock vibes with rowdy punk energy that amalgamates into a bunch of kick ass tunes with killer earworm choruses.
Kicking off with guaranteed mosh pit awakener 'Raise the Bar' it blasts with melodic, surf inspired punk franticness and the perfect balance of chaos and structure. It boasts a shouty, drinking music style chorus, catchy hooks and epic riffs.
'Guinness Paltrow' brings the pace down somewhat but still retains the raw energy and feeling of organised chaos. Fuzzy riffs, protesting drums and a massive chorus.
Coming in on a shining guitars 'Danny Is the Greatest Lover' sounds uncannily like Idlewild's 'When I Argue I See Shapes' mixed with early 90's indie pioneers The Railway Children before punking it up into a glittering chorus of mayhem, eccentric guitars and raucous solos. Mellowing and building throughout its the ultimate genre bending anthem.
Title track 'Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time' is a thoughtful offering with more pensive vocals and the feeling of early Manic Street Preachers but with more sparkle. The retro riffs glisten over a backdrop of hammering drums, moments of disordinance topped with raw, melodic vox.
EP closer 'All Yours' gave me serious +44 ‘No It Isn't' vibes with its laid back surf sound and glimmering soft riffs as well drawing likenesses to New Found Glory but with less nasally vocals. It's an infectious listen with a charming sound and yet another killer anthemic chorus.
Overall, Big Hug seamlessly blends genres taking influence from a wide spectrum of artists and injecting their personalities to create a sound that is instantly likeable, totally authentic and completely addictive. "Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time" will have you singing along whilst dancing round your living room in no time!
