“Elephant Kind have since started making ripples in their adopted country.” - NME
“‘Superblue’ gets them ready for a lush, vibrant chapter in their lives.” - Clash
As they prepare to take their arena-filling live experience in their homeland of Indonesia to their intimate debut UK headline tour, Elephant Kind will deliver a taste of what to expect with the release of the new EP ‘Live In London’ on October 12th. Now available to pre-save HERE, the EP is launched alongside a live video of their interpretation of the Donna Summer classic ‘I Feel Love’.
Recording during their summer show at The Camden Assembly, the ‘Live In London’ EP showcases a band at the height of their powers. Uniting their exemplary musicianship with the star quality provided by frontman Bam Mastro’s sleek vocals, it’s a stellar performance which introduces their kaleidoscopic collision course of yearning alt-pop, energising indie and jazzy psychedelia. The EP debuts two brand new songs in the shape of ‘Follow Through’ and ‘It Meant Nothing’, which both provide an insight to their future direction. It’s completed by two fan favourites with ‘Love As’ from this year’s ‘Superblue’ EP, and ‘Scenario II’ from the soundtrack to their short film project ‘Scenarios’.
Bam says, “We’re thrilled to embark on our first ever UK headline tour later this month, and the excitement is off the charts! As a special treat, we’re releasing a live EP to give you a sneak peek of the electrifying energy that awaits.”
The impact of the EP is amplified by the accompanying video for ‘I Feel Love’. Elephant Kind transform Donna Summer’s 1977 disco classic into a synth-pop beast, with Bayu Adisapoetra’s rhythms providing a driving intensity and synths from Kevin Septanto dramatically growing in stature to support Bam’s soaring falsetto.
After emerging in 2013, Elephant Kind quickly became one of Indonesia’s leading bands, regularly packing large venues in Jakarta, amassing millions of streams for their first two full-length albums, ‘City J’ and ‘The Greatest Ever’, and performing with international artists including The xx and Franz Ferdinand. But a new deal with MOLA Records presented an opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to relocate to London and to connect with a much broader international audience.
And so in the summer of 2022, the trio - frontman and founder Bam Mastro (vocals/guitar), Bayu Adisapoetra (drums) and Kevin Septanto (bass) - travelled over 7000 miles to start a new life in a city that they hadn’t even visited before. The short film ‘From Indo To England’ charts their experiences throughout this time, a story that has subsequently been explored by tastemakers such as NME, Clash and Dork.
The gamble is beginning to pay off, the first result being the release of their EP ‘Superblue’, which was produced by Sam Petts-Davies (Thom Yorke, Puma Blue, Warpaint). Their first shows in the UK have included Camden Rocks, The Alternative Escape and shows for Sofar Sounds.
