The Line of Best Fit

"Immersed in sunny melancholy, all blissed out dispositions...evoking the likes of Faye Webster and Lana Del Rey"

(27th September) London-based British/Greek singer-songwriter Eleni Drake today releases new 8-track EP 'Above Deep Water' via MNRK (Jelani Blackman, Delilah Montagu) - following previous tasters "Singing Elvis (Part II)" "Let it Go and Let it Be" and "Daisy (Keep My Sweater)".

New EP 'Above Deep Water' - self-produced by Eleni in collaboration with Frank Colucci (Ashnikko, Sea Girls, Art School Girlfriend) - pulls influence from acts including Billie Holiday and Mazzy Star, to Cleo Sol and Yazmin Lacey; a resolute and refreshing timelessness married to boldly modern sensibilities.

Lyrically, Eleni notes: "'Above Deep Water' opens up about the desolate feelings that come from moving through life alone. But it talks about the freedom, the understanding, the acceptance, and the revelry that comes with being alone too.”

All of 'Above Deep Water' is tinged with a bitter yet righteous sadness; Drake’s lyrics tell a tale of growing wise enough to leave yet wishing you were naive enough to stay. There’s an unnerving quality to the steady dynamics at play, like an unflinching gaze held.

New EP 'Above Deep Water' arrives following Eleni's acclaimed self-produced and self-released 2023 project 'Surf the Sun'. Balancing the curiosity and creativity of Adrianne Lenker, Faye Webster and Julien Baker, with the emotion and grandeur of Lana Del Rey, 'Surf The Sun' was a collection of songs rooted in the discovery of freedom and empowerment; an ode to the lightness and breeze that comes from freeing yourself of ties, letting go of the things that no longer serve you, and stepping into the warmth.

If 'Surf the Sun' was indeed the sun, Eleni says, her new EP is the moon. It’s the flip-side of the coin — exploring the shadows that wait for you to find them no matter where you’ve wandered, the pain that solitude eventually forces you to stare in the eye. Both of these collections are tied to each other; for Eleni Drake, both needed to exist.

Eleni Drake received plaudits for her performances at The Great Escape and SXSW festivals earlier this year, and her releases to date have received high-praise from esteemed tastemakers including The Line Of Best Fit, CLASH Magazine, Consequence, The Independent, The Arts Desk, La Blogotheque, Wonderland Magazine and more, with over 30 million streams across her catalogue to date.

Eleni Drake's new EP 'Above Deep Water' is out now - released 27th September on 12" vinyl and digitally via MNRK - available here. Eleni Drake headlines Camden Assembly in London on 19th November and The Castle Hotel in Manchester on 20th November. Eleni tours with flipturn this November.
