Norwich alt/noise-rock band Eat Your Own Head are pleased to announce their return with news of their forthcoming new EP The Trawler, set for release on 31st May 2024 via Drongo Records.
Laid down in sessions during Nov/Dec 2023 by producer David Vickers, mixed by Mikey Shaw, and mastered by Katie Tavini, the EP was recorded at Bomb Store Studio, nestled in the atomic bomb store and servicing facility on Thetford Heath—one of the two central stores built in the mid-1950s to coincide with the deployment by the RAF of its first operational atomic bomb, codenamed `Blue Danube'.
To celebrate the news, the band have revealed lead single ‘Chest Pains’ which is out now—a sledgehammer of a first offering that lifts back the curtain on the band’s constant poking and prodding of the darkest, most thrilling corners of the world of heavy music.
Wracked with a simmering tension, the opening track from the EP takes no hostages, punching through with a relentless intensity—the hook ‘you stitched me up, but I’m alright with it’ summarising the bluntness and wry humour of Eat Your Own Head at their best.
‘Chest Pains’ is a caustic song of self-criticism, sneering at its creators' lack of ability to control their vices. In the words of guitarist Jordan Woolnough, "we wanted to make something sludgy and punchy, an angular riff that feels uncomfortable but simultaneously great for head banging."
Eat Your Own Head count themselves as one of the bands spearheading a new wave of heavy music, redefining the UK rock scene. Known for their unpredictable twists and turns, the band veer from floor stomping riffs to tender moments of dark tranquillity. Centred around an organic approach to creating their music, their lyrics tap into the struggles of navigating modern life in 2024.
Drawn together by a collective yearning to play extremely loud music (as all the best heavy bands are) the band present an enticing blend of rich, heavy alt-rock that sidesteps some of the genres more obvious pitfalls and replaces them instead with muscular vocals, hooks, and a technical and unpredictable musicality that evokes comparisons to early Marmozets, as well as underground heroes Blacklisters, Blakfish, and &U&I.
Taking inspiration from everything from Nirvana to Black Midi, the band formed in 2019 and were straight out of the blocks with the Hank EP in 2020, quickly landing themselves notable accolades from BBC 6music, The Line of Best Fit, Louder Than War, and Amazing Radio.
They released their 2022 debut album Neck-Deep In The Blyth, recorded by Tom Peters (Alpha Male Tea Party, Bicruious, The Hyena Kill) at Trapdoor Studios and mastered by Katie Tavini (Los Bitchos, Arlo Parks, Zuzu).
Early singles ‘Bullets’ and ‘The Concrete Of Moulded Men’ received support from a swathe of alternative new music tastemakers including Fresh on The Net, Bring The Noise, The Punk Site, Distorted Sound, Maximum Volume, Soundsphere Magazine, Outline Magazine and Progzilla with radio support to date from BBC introducing, Amazing Radio and the Artrocker show on Resonance FM.
The quartet have built a strong live reputation from the word go and have since been on to play all over the UK including support slots with more established acts such as The Physics House Band, St. Pierre Snake Invasion, Sugar Horse, The Guru Guru, Lunch Money Life, My Octopus Mind and many more.
