dead7 EP Illustrates Grief & Destruction

Listen to “All Time Does Is Pass and All I Do Is Remember”

DEAD7’S NEWEST EP AND BEING “A VOICE FOR THOSE WHO FEEL LOST”

dead7’s sophomore EP all time does is pass and all i do is remember is a crushingly heavy and poignant experience.

Led by previous singles “let me drown” and “two lives,” the St. Louis metalcore band explores self-destruction and loss through a lens of acceptance. Moving through pain, even when it feels unbearable, is a central theme of the EP.

Taking elements from progressive metal & post-hardcore, the band’s switch from brutal, chugging riffs to ambient, atmospheric instrumentals echo heavyweights such as Loathe & Spiritbox.

Pain stays / It never goes away / Just throws at me all the things I’ll never change,” vocalist Jason Kozik screams in “let me drown,” bleeding into clean singing - “Just let me drown / Like I want to.”

dead7 sought to address taboo topics on the EP:

"We reflected on times where we felt our lowest. Whether that was past relationships that weren’t working, situations where we felt like we had no control, being overwhelmed by life’s daily struggles, and thoughts of death. We believe the raw emotion from these vulnerable feelings and situations are what people feel the most, and probably talk about the least," Kozik said.

Fragility is displayed in both lyrics and instrumentals, but there’s no shortage of devastating breakdowns and harsh riffs. Uniquely mechanical and eerie, “god’s eye” features an unsettling call - “they wait for you” repeats while Kozik’s scream “you can’t take it back now” cuts through.

dead7’s debut music video, “weather” ties the EP’s themes of duality & struggle together. “It’s guts & it’s glory / It’s gold & it’s misery,” Kozik gently sings over airy instrumentals. The visuals are minimalist - Kozik, bathed in green light, sits in front of a bright red background. Close-up shots add to the vulnerability in the song’s lyrics.

The chorus repeats: “I don’t wanna get better / I just wanna stay under the weather / I don’t think I need an answer / Cause loving myself feels like pulling the trigger.

Kozik explained the band's goal in writing "weather":

"The chorus feels like a spark for what our band does best: a catchy melody that conveys a feeling people are scared to talk about. We want to try and be a voice for those who feel lost or unwanted."

“weather’s” outro is a powerful breakdown that shifts into a major key. Shadows and dramatic flashes of the band mirror the sonic chaos.

With all time does is pass and all i do is remember and their previous EP the new pain collective, dead7 are cementing themselves among the newest crop of metalcore’s most innovative bands.
