The route to Das Koolies’ long-awaited debut album has so far been sketched out in uncompromising, expletive-laden quasi-kraut electronica featuring a Hollywood star and sunroof-down, driving psych-pop that drew pictures of barren, dustbowl America. Having proven themselves destructors of convention and manipulators of expectation as four fifths of Super Furry Animals for over three decades, the band handbrake turns into their latest track release, A RIDE – seven, immersive minutes of joyous, epic, twisted techno-pop with a political slant.

The track comes rapidly off the back of the recent announcement that, after being veiled in secrecy and rumour within the folds of the Furries’ story since the 00’s, Das Koolies will finally manifest physically during THREE in-store appearances at Rough Trade shops. Tickets for all dates are available now via DICE.

Rooted in the on- and off-stage experimentation that occurred in the run-outs of their most critically-acclaimed records and the plugged-in jams that ended their live shows, A Ride’s sense of abandon is matched by its sense of fresh artistic possibility. Without reputation to manage, the four bandmates – Huw ‘Bunf’ Bunford, Cian Ciarán, Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce – rode a new wave that has connected dormant ideas from the past with current energies.

Guitar lines that emerged in the dead of night, lyrics that sail over geographical borders and beyond nationality to follow filthy money, smooth harmonised vocals and all colours of beats, breaks, squelches and bleeps combine in rich symphony make A Ride perhaps Das Koolies most mind-blowing/mind-expanding release yet.

The band says of The Ride: “Maybe this one’s about thieves in public school uniforms and their tax haven stashes. The start was pure electronic. Then the vocals pushed open a door. What was behind it was kind of bizarre. But, then, that’s music.”

After last appearing on stage together in December 2016 as Super Furry Animals, the members of Das Koolies reconvene for their first, three announced shows this autumn, on the day of and following the release of DK.01. With hints of more to come, the confirmed, intimate instore shows are as follows:

Fri 22 Sep – Rough Trade East, London

Mon 2 Oct – Rough Trade Bristol

Tue 3 Oct – Rough Trade Nottingham

Prior to announcing the release of DK.01, emerging on Fri 22 September 2023, Das Koolies released the statement-of-intent EP, The Condemned at the start of the year. With vinyl copies quickly selling out, the fresh, New Year campaign also offered fans a look into the visual world the band was creating around their music in collaboration with artist and collective, Edwin Burdis/Dah Dit Dit, responsible for creating immersive companion pieces to albums by bands including Arctic Monkeys, The Coral and Blossoms.

The accompanying video for A Ride adds another layer onto Das Koolies’ digital inventory of audio-visual stimulus.

Das Koolies DK.01 was produced by Das Koolies and mixed in collaboration with Grammy nominated engineer, Tom Forrest (Duke Dumont, Basement Jaxx) and MPG (Music Producer’s Guild) UK Music Producer of the Year 2022 Marta Salogni (Bjork, Depeche Mode).

DK.01 will be released in multiple physical formats, including Dinked collectors’ edition recycled coloured vinyl with bonus 7", Bandcamp and Indies recycled coloured vinyl, black recycled double vinyl, CD and digital.
