Singer-songwriter Chris Simmons has launched a heartfelt Christmas single, A Cold December, to support bereavement charity AtaLoss. Released to coincide with National Grief Awareness Week, the track channels Chris’ personal journey with loss into a song of hope, remembrance, and resilience. Profits after costs from CD and download sales will go to AtaLoss, a charity dedicated to providing support for those coping with grief.

Currently gaining momentum, A Cold December is being tipped by major betting sites as a strong contender for the Christmas No. 1. If successful, Chris would become the first unsigned artist to achieve this festive milestone.

Chris draws inspiration from deeply personal experiences, using his music to connect with others who have faced loss. Praised by icons like Jackson Browne and Chris Difford (Squeeze), Chris has an impressive track record, performing at festivals such as Glastonbury and Isle of Wight, and sharing stages with legends like Sir Tom Jones, Paloma Faith, Simply Red. Yet, his career has not been without challenges.

In 2014, Chris was featured on industry tip sheets alongside George Ezra, but tragedy struck when his brother died by suicide. This was followed by the loss of his parents and the disruption of the COVID pandemic. A Cold December marks a powerful comeback, expressing his grief while offering a message of hope.

“It’s a song based on real life with a positive message,” says Chris. “It’s about the inevitability of loss, but also the enduring beauty of shared memories.”

The accompanying music video features the charming 'DecemBear,' who acts as a companion symbolizing support and love. Chris says, “This was such a fun video to make. I wanted to capture the uplifting message of the song, and I think we achieved that.”

The buzz surrounding A Cold December has surprised Chris, propelling him into a competitive race against industry titans like Wham!, Ed Sheeran, Oasis and Reverend and The Makers for the Christmas No. 1 spot.

“This is one of the biggest musical David vs. Goliath stories in recent memory,” says Roy Stannard, AtaLoss’ Director of Income Generation & Communications.

As an ambassador for AtaLoss, Chris is deeply committed to spreading awareness about their bereavement support services. All profits after costs from the single will directly benefit the charity, helping to expand their resources for the bereaved.

Chris has also embarked on a two-week care home tour across the South of England, bringing joy and music to residents. “The goal is to bring some joy and give people a chance to sing along,” says Chris. “The first week is fully booked, but we’ve kept the second week open for requests from care homes.”

A Cold December is available now on all digital platforms, as well as in CD format with exclusive B-sides, ‘Passing Out’ and ‘The Reasons Surrounding.’ CDs can be purchased individually or in bundles via The Republic of Music online shop.

“I’m incredibly proud to be an ambassador for AtaLoss,” Chris says. “Their support has been life-changing for me, and I hope this song helps raise funds and awareness for their incredible work.”
