Helenor is a world builder. Born in the bedroom of Brooklyn-based visual artist and songwriter David DiAngelis, Helenor is the DIY sonic and visual exploration of DiAngelis’s relationship to metamorphosis, moments of frustrating stasis, and habits (both good and bad). To experience a Helenor track is to be transported to a place where even depression shimmers a bit, where existential questions offer catharsis in lieu of answers, where summer heat permeates year round, and where the clouds carry poetic messages as they roll by for anyone who happens to want to look up.

June 30, 2023, New York, NY: “Warm Ways,” The debut single off of Helenor’s upcoming sophomore LP, “A public place” premiers on June 30th. Floating and introspective, the track asks listeners to relax in its immaculate indie-art-pop landscape while asking the question: “How do you escape from always having an escape plan?”

The much-anticipated release is Helenor’s first since their 2019 DIY debut LP “Something Twice.” Since then, frontman and songwriter David DiAngelis experienced a mid-pandemic move from his home state of Massachusetts to Brooklyn, and expanded from a one-man bedroom pop project to a full band operation while sticking true to his DIY production roots. Helenor’s sound has expanded too, featuring multiple voices and collaborators such as Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim, Empress Of, Hannah Cohen), as well as more refined production style. Prominent lead guitars shine, while honing Helenor’s recognizable guitar-meets-synths bedrock and lyric poetry that reminds one of floating in a cool body of water along the side of a major highway.

Of the single, DiAngelis says: “I wrote this song while staying in a two-month sublet in Brooklyn. It was the middle of the summer and it was the thick kind of hot out. The window was too wide for an A/C, and the standing fan just sort pushed hot air at you in a passive aggressive way.

I had just put everything I owned into a storage locker in Boston, besides some clothes, a computer, and a janky nylon string guitar I had absorbed from my grandmother’s house during college. I spent the morning biking between StreetEasy apartment listings to no avail. I remember just laying on the ground in my underwear because the floorboards felt less evil, while fingerpicking on the guitar. I was reflecting on how old habits were continuing to affect my life, and what being a commitment-phobe can really do to you over time.. I was in the middle of trying to change everything in my life, and the song just sort of fell out.”

Fans of the sticky parts of Alex G, MGMT and Blur will resonate with “Warm Ways’” chilled out, singable, indie sizzle, arriving just in time for another summer of city heat.

“A public place” is out everywhere Fall 2023.
