Brighton Wildcard Freddie J Watts Hits the Ground Running With the Joyously Turbulent ‘Entwined’ Out 24th September via Strong Island Recordings

A popular entity in Brighton’s flourishing alt-folk scene, Freddie J Watts will release his debut EP At Every Turn via South Coast tastemakers Strong Island Recordings (Rosie Alena, Los Bitchos, Ugly).

Featuring contributions from Ella Oona Russell and Nina Winderlind of rising avant-folk collective The New Eves (Slow Dance), the lead single ‘Entwined’ fuses intricate organic elements with a brazen dose of glam rock. Hurtling through rapid verses that give rise to unexpectedly expansive interludes, Watts’ palpable influence from psychedelic obscurities and records from the old-Midwest feed into an eclectic and immersive listening experience.

Clocking in at just over five minutes, ‘Entwined’ features some of the lushest arrangements on the forthcoming EP as flute, cello and trumpet lines combine with guitars, bass and drums in an outro reminiscent of King Crimson’s seminal opus ‘I Talk To The Wind’.

Lyrically contemplating connection post-Covid, Freddie J Watts explains:
“After the apocalyptic few years that just passed, ‘Entwined’ is intended to invite listeners to reflect on how they relate to one another and the inherent duality of the world we live in. It delves into themes of individuality, connection and the ever-shifting sands of time. The lyrics question our inescapable entanglement with one another and hang a question mark over our understanding of linear time.”

Arriving alongside a claustrophobically-shot video that leans into the surrealness of the subject matter, Freddie J Watts promises to keep us on toes as we await the rest of the EP.
