Toronto, ON – August 29, 2024 – Rising star Brett Matthews, a native of Cape Breton, has just released his newest single, “Lucky Ones,” via HalfLife Records and Only Gold Records. A protégé of Canadian hip-hop legend Classified, Matthews first connected with the renowned artist in 2019, quickly joining his touring band. Their collaboration deepened in 2023, with Classified stepping in as producer and collaborator on Matthews’ work. Following the success of “If I Die Today,” a late 2023 instant classic, and last spring’s hit “Tomorrow,” Matthews returns with another moving yet feel-good anthem, this time celebrating human connection, love, and gratitude.

“Lucky Ones” effortlessly blends Country, Pop, and RnB influences, charmingly capturing the often-overlooked realization of how priceless our loved ones are and the gratitude we should feel for having them in our lives. The music video, starring Nova Scotian Instagram influencer Alicia McCarvell, has already amassed 20,000 views in just a few days. Co-written with Ria Mae and Classified, “Lucky Ones” showcases Matthews’ soulful vocals and sincere lyrics, which tackle heavy subjects with a sense of hope. His organic blend of genres is carving out a distinct lane in the Americana genre.

As one of Nova Scotia’s most promising prospects, Matthews is drawing comparisons to Bon Iver and City & Colour. Since joining Classified’s band in 2019, he has toured extensively throughout Canada, performing at JUNOfest in Halifax and the ECMAs in Charlottetown. This November, Matthews will join Classified’s “Welcome to the Maritimes Tour,” a month-long national string of 19 dates starting in Winnipeg, hitting Vancouver, and ending in Montreal. The tour will also feature talented Nova Scotian artists JRDN and Ria Mae as support acts.

2024 has been a standout year for Matthews. The buzz generated by “If I Die Today” significantly boosted his profile, leading to greater visibility in other markets. The song was featured on Spotify playlists such as New Music Country Weekly and Country Frontier and placed second in the Country category of the 2023 American Songwriter Song Contest, a prestigious competition held in Nashville, Tennessee, judged by award-winning artists and songwriters like Jelly Roll, Julia Michaels, and Tommy Lee.

“Lucky Ones” carries that same earnest energy and has the potential to make a similar impact, as Matthews edges closer to becoming a recognized name in the Canadian music scene—one that listeners will soon associate with both mainstream appeal and genuine emotion.
