November 2024 Australian Support Dates w/ Fink + Black Aleph On Sale Now

Irish/Australian art-folk virtuoso Bonniesongs, aka Bonnie Stewart, is delighted to announce her return with the official video for her new single ‘Halloween Birthday’ set for release on 31st October 2024 via new label home Impressed Recordings.

A typically finely crafted cut of lo-fi magic from the songwriter, ‘Halloween Birthday’ swells and swirls with a heady vocal refrain over her signature lurching drum work, with subtle string sections flourishing and billowing beneath gently plucked, stripped-back guitar layers.

Recorded with ARIA-nominated producer Tony Buchen (Smashing Pumpkins), and mixed and mastered by David Trumpmanis, the new single comes accompanied by an official music video directed and shot by Nick Mckk.

Commenting on the track, Bonnie says: “Halloween Birthday is a nostalgic song that celebrates my obsession with all things Halloween with a yearning desire to have it all. Being from Ireland, where Halloween is taken very seriously, I’ve often been inspired by the spooky and supernatural. I’m interested in creating a sense of otherworldliness which is what Halloween is all about! The lyrics are literally inspired by my childhood anxiety of getting to my friends’ birthday party, as well as trick or treating before all the good sweets were gone.”

Bonnie will be supporting English singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, and disc jockey Fin Greenall, better known by his stage name Fink, on his upcoming November 2024 Australian tour dates, with tickets on sale now (see below for listings).

For a lucky peck of audiences in Australia over the past 6 years, Stewart has been one of those subtly transcendent artists. Described as “dreamy experimental indie folk”, she’s steadily been creating an ever-broadening platform for her unique sound amongst the Sydney songwriting scene. On much of her earlier material, Stewart’s sweet, ghostly vocals sail over the polyrhythmic backgrounds created between her mandolin, percussion and vocal loops, while her imaginative lyrics tell diverse and dreamlike stories of treehouses, mice, birds, flying and video games.

Stewart’s previously-released four track debut EP Strings (2018) was released on respected Aussie muso label Art As Catharsis, a bold collaboration with friends Sascha Bota and Freya Schack-Arnott. Six days after a one-off performance as a trio, they made a recording of their experimental, textural and improvised variations on Bonnie's songs. The record was influenced by Jim Black’s improvised jazz record AlasNoAxis, drawing comparisons to Joanna Newsom, Cat Power, and Bjork, and was widely praised for challenging conventions of modern Australian music.

Her 2019 debut album Energetic Mind (Small Pond Records) took Stewart’s sound in a new, heavier, direction whilst also retaining the charm of her earlier releases, drawing a raft of notable UK press support from The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, Guitar World, PROG Magazine and more.

Alongside international praise from Paste Magazine and Tone Deaf, Irish tastemakers Nialler 9, Joe.ie, and The Thin Air became fast fans, with album singles 'Coo Coo', ‘Ice Cream’, ‘Barbara’, and ‘Frank’ picking up international radio plays from BBC 6music, Radio X, Amazing Radio, Triple J, FBi Radio, and RTRFM.

New single ‘Halloween Birthday’ is the first new material in 4 years from Bonnie since the release of her 2020 standalone singles ‘Blood Moon’ and follow-up ‘Sand Dunes’, which was released as a benefit for wildlife charities helping to preserve and restore Australian wildlife following on from the devastation of bushfires.

Stewart has previously appeared alongside The Beths, Joan As Police Woman, Gordi, and Natalie Evans, and will be announcing 2025 UK live dates in due course.
