Japanese alt-rock band BO NINGEN are delighted to reveal their new single ‘Pantheon Bar’ set for release on 7th August 2024 via Alcopop! Records.

To celebrate, the quartet will be performing a special BBC 6music live to air session for Marc Riley at 9pm on Monday 12th August, playing 2 tracks from Holy Mountain and 2 from their last studio album Sudden Fictions.

The news comes ahead of a freshly-announced run of August 2024 UK live dates including an appearance on the main stage at ArcTanGent Festival, and a new run of November 2024 EU tour dates, with tickets on sale now (see below for listings).

BO NINGEN released their alternative soundtrack album to cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s seminal film The Holy Mountain earlier this year via Alcopop! Records. The band also hosted a very special SOLD OUT live performance of their alternative soundtrack at EartH, Hackney—a 700 capacity tiered seated venue with original Art Deco features and state of the art L-ISA sound system, to provide the best possible experience of this must-see-and-hear event.

Commenting on the new single, guitarist Yuki Tsujii said: “Pantheon Bar is a rather weird choice for a single. This warped, and somehow hilarious, track doesn’t really go anywhere but when we came to think about the next single, we realised the score has such a significant role in the film’s narrative. “

“This track is scored for the scene of Pantheon Bar where people ended up being lost in search of The Holy Mountain, and it’s about those losers whose dreams got shattered. They’re like in limbo, between reality and The Holy Mountain, and we wanted to express the insanity, the state of your mind being completely pleasantly bent.”

The band were also recently announced to curate Le Guess Who? Festival 2024 in the Netherlands this year alongside Arooj Aftab, Crystallmess, DARKSIDE, Mabe Fratti and Touching Bass.

BO NINGEN’s curation is dedicated to “representing the BO NINGEN community, with lots of collaborative projects and with a strong focus on audiovisual performances.” The band will also present their own alternate live score to Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 magnum opus The Holy Mountain.

More info:
With four studio albums to date winning them a host of huge-name collaborators and fans (including Alexander McQueen, Douglas Hart, Damo Suzuki, Jehnny Beth, Hedi Slimane, Juergen Teller, Lydia Lunch, Faust, NTS Radio and many more), BO NINGEN’s iconic look and quest for artistic invention is only surpassed by their intense live performances, which have earned them a place as one of the most captivating live acts in the UK, and saw them voted ‘Best Live Act of 2018’ by festival-goers for their appearance at Green Man Festival.

The Guardian, i-D, DAZED, Love Magazine, Nowness, Design Week, NME, The Quietus, DIY magazine, and CRACK Magazine have all hailed them for their chaotic & anarchic onstage performances, often leading to personal injury. Rightly so, as their now-fearsome live reputation has earned them a host of global tour dates alongside such notable artists as Nick Cave, Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals, Kasabian, TV on the Radio, The Fall, Savages, WIRE, The Cult, The Horrors, Temples, Keiji Haino and many more.

Over the course of their career the band have featured on line ups at some of the world’s biggest festivals—including a personal invitation to Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival—appearing at Glastonbury, MIDEM, Coachella, Fuji Rock, Iceland Airwaves, Summer Sonic, Reading & Leeds Festivals, Primavera, Canadian Music Week, End Of The Road, SXSW, CMJ, Big Day Out, The Great Escape, and scores of other events including the Venice Biennale (in collaboration with Tim Noble and Sue Webster), Frieze Art Fair (in association with ICA), and Doug Aitken's Station To Station at The Barbican.

The band were featured at the 2019 Sheffield Documentary Festival for a one off event mixing several short films by Toshio Matsumoto and Bo Ningen’s live show, and teamed up with ‘Deeper into Movies’ to create a unique recreation and performance of the soundtrack to the seminal film ‘The Holy Mountain’ directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. With two sold out screenings at the Rio Cinema in Dalston, a subsequent screening and live performance occurred at Sensoria Festival in Sheffield in October 2019. The project was nominated for ‘Event Cinema Campaign of the Year’ by Screen Daily Magazine.

Long working in the liminal spaces between the worlds of music, art, fashion, literature and film, the band have a storied history of creative collaboration with the likes of Yoko Ono, Alexander McQueen, Douglas Hart, Damo Suzuki, Jehnny Beth, Hedi Slimane, Juergen Teller, Lydia Lunch, Faust, NTS Radio and more.

BO NINGEN announced their signing to Alcopop! Records for their fourth studio album Sudden Fictions in 2020, with critical praise and support for the record from BBC 6music, Q Magazine, The Quietus, Guitar World, Classic Rock, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, London in Stereo, DORK, UPSET, Louder Than War and many more.

They followed up in 2021 with BO NINGEN: Rebuilt, a very special reissue of their critically-acclaimed 2010 self-titled debut album. Intent on avoiding the cliched lazy reissue tropes of new packaging, remasters, or retakes, for this new version of the album the band decided to completely reinvent the record from the ground up.

Recorded by Kristian Craig Robinson at Total Refreshment Centre and mastered by The Anticipation Illicit Tsuboi at RDS Toritsudai, their 2024 release The Holy Mountain consists of a limited box set of triple vinyl, each in their own unique colour, plus a limited 40 page unique book containing a series of original artworks created by Kohhei Matsuda and Simon Fowler depicting their own interpretation and inspiration of the music of ‘The Holy Mountain’.
