Ben Avitra Releases Compassionate and Introspective Single 'The River'

Perth-based singer-songwriter Ben Avitra packs in emotive and real narratives with a potent blend of alt-pop/ indie-folk that's earnest and impassioned. Trickling through the mountains, Avitra has released the grounded single 'The River'.

With a wealth of experience performing in various outfits and playing live music going back as far as 2007, Ben Avitra took a leap and decided to dive into the vulnerable world of releasing his own solo work in 2020. After navigating mental and physical health issues from 2016 to 2020, Avitra brought new inspiration to his music and songwriting with his first handful of releases.

Now, exploring a vulnerable and challenging narrative in 'The River'Ben Avitra reflects on a number of disconcerting experiences he had in his late teenage years and a friendship that became troublesome. Fallen into heavy drug abuse, Ben Avitra's close friend gradually became more and more uncontrollable and manic, creating a volatile and tense sharehouse. Ben Avitra shares:

"In my late teens, I had a good friend whom I cared for who ended up grappling with a heavy drug addiction. My friend and I would bear witness to her comedowns, and it only got worse over time.  At one point, she was throwing my personal belongings out of the house and it became pure mental and emotional abuse. It ultimately led me to having to leave the house in a hurry. There was nothing I could do or say, and we didn’t speak for years. This is a reflection on that time."

Despite its gloomy story inspiration, 'The River' feels earthy and grounded as it gracefully flows from start to finish. Spacious finger-picked acoustic guitar is delicately played as Avitra's heartfelt vocal delivery gracefully makes a commanding presence. Building anticipation with this stirring and aweinspiring atmosphere, a stoic drum beat is introduced followed by resounding bass and a unique echoing beat-box effect for a bridge. Wholesome and compassionate, Avitra has pieced together a suspenseful and inspiring voyage with 'The River'.
