(TURNSTILE, TITLE FIGHT, TURNOVER, MEWITHOUTYOU)
Throughout the summer, Balance and Composure have been sharing glimpses at their long-awaited and highly-anticipated return to form new record, with you in spirit. Out October 4 and produced by Grammy-nominated producer Will Yip, their first new LP in almost a decade marks a powerful new chapter for the Pennsylvania band; it'll also be released on Yip's label, Memory Music. They'll celebrate with a run of headlining shows next month with support from Kevin Devine & the Goddamn Band and Milly.
Balance and Composure have shared their final preview of the record with its title track, "with you in spirit." Here they offer a sonic blend of atmospheric post-punk and towering rock, channeling both the heavy introspection and melodic tension that have come to define their sound.
Like its namesake, vocalist/guitarist Jon Simmons delves into themes of absence and preemptive grief on the track, all against a backdrop of shimmering guitars and thunderous climaxes. It's a vivid exploration of emotional distance and longing, capturing the band's own evolution following their 2019 hiatus.

Musically, with you in spirit feels like Balance and Composure's true form––collectively, Simmons, lead guitarist Erik Petersen, guitarist Andy Slaymaker, bassist Matt Warner, and drummer Dennis Wilson are pulling from the best parts of themselves, exploring new depths while paying homage to where they've been, too.

2016’s Light We Made was meant to be Balance's final full-length record. When they announced their breakup in 2019, things weren’t clicking the way they used to; it felt like the group had run out of road. But when the pandemic took hold the following year and ripped away all routine, Simmons started to miss his long-time bandmates.
Eventually, Petersen reached out with a simple question: how would they feel about simply trying to write music together again? Everyone agreed—the absence had weighed heavily on them, and the friends gathered in October 2022 and began to write new songs.
“I began to feel like a kid again,” says Simmons. “We were writing these songs for the pure reason of having an outlet and getting together with your friends, no pressure. We were longing for it, and we found it as soon as we got together. We didn’t want that train to stop.”
