(1st November) London indie-pop singer-songwriter Alice Costelloe today releases her new EP 'When It's The Time', via cult UK label Moshi Moshi Records. The EP arrives ahead of Alice's headline show at Paper Dress Vintage in London on 7th November. Focus single "I Never Dance" is also released today; a Metronomy-leaning cut written whilst Alice was in the throes of a bout of flu, as Alice explains...
"That delirium of a fever really reminded me of the feeling of having an intense crush," Alice recalls. "It made me think back to when I’d first met my partner at a halloween party and we’d danced all night even though both of us are definitely not natural dancers."
A collaborative affair forged in the studio with esteemed producer Mike Lindsay (Laura Marling, Anna B Savage), Alice Costelloe's second solo EP 'When It's The Time' marks a significant departure from her previous collaborations, revealing a depth of emotion and artistic maturity.
Delving into themes of mortality, desire, and the fleeting nature of life, the EP offers a poignant and often witty reflection on the fragility of existence, infused with a newfound appreciation for the present moment.
"In a way, it’s about endings, moving on from old relationships, and contemplating the end of life and the end of the world, but it’s also about desire - desire to dance or drink a glass of wine with someone, but also desire to figure out how to make yourself a better life in a world that often feels apocalyptic," Alice reflects.
Sonically, the EP blends elements of art-pop and indie with electronic influences (in no small part due to producer Mike Lindsay's "treasure chest of synths"). Utilising a stripped-down approach, allowing the instrumentation to breathe, Alice's astute and humorous lyrics take centre-stage, resulting in a collection of songs that are at once both intimate, expansive and deftly humorous.
On working with Mike Lindsay, Alice notes how he broadened her horizons in terms of songwriting and production;
"This record opened up my eyes to a whole different way of doing things, not just sonically but also in terms of how to actually enjoy making a record, to have fun with it. It felt like no idea was too silly to explore (even a one minute long recorder solo!). That freedom, encouragement and lack of pressure, combined with Mike’s insane talent made me feel I could truly be and express myself because I knew it was all going to turn out ok. And as a result, even though it doesn’t sound much like what I’ve done before, it feels the most ‘me’ of any record I’ve made."
Alice Costelloe's new EP 'When It's The Time' is out now, released 1st November on Moshi Moshi Records. Alice headlines Paper Dress Vintage in London on 7th November, tickets on sale here.
