Growing up isn’t easy yet aspirational, teenage songwriting sensation, Alex Spencer finds the upside to every stumble and misstep on fiery earworm single, One Step Forward – OUT NOW. Signed, sealed and delivered in just two-and-a-half, sky-streaking minutes, Spencer’s beyond-his-years lyricism and superheated, meteoric way with melody fizz throughout the song which guides the way to his debut, five track EP of the same name released this Fri 10 November 2023.

With his overground emergence only coming in the spring, with the release of his debut single with hit-making indie label, Modern Sky, A Night To Waste, Spencer’s eventful year of leaving school, gigging and releasing will come to a head by supporting Jamie Webster at a SOLD OUT O2 Victoria Warehouse on Sat 18 November and a celebratory night headlining his home city’s ornate Deaf Institute venue on Fri 24 November. Aiming to prove the word-of-mouth buzz counts as irrefutable truth on the night, the few remaining tickets for his debut top-billing show at the ornate venue are available at www.gigsandtours.com

Putting all of himself into his music, Spencer’s desire to hurdle mundane mishaps and swerve anyone that would choose to set obstacles in his way beats loudly through One Step Forward’s aspirational indie heart. Pieced together into future headliner-standard perfection from raw bedroom beginnings with artist, songwriter and producer, Adam French, the potent, final EP taster effortlessly evokes the romantic, working-class defiance of Sam Fender and the joyful, up-tempo pop of Declan McKenna.

Spencer says of the track: “’One Step Forward’ talks about how sometimes life can take a turn and stop you in your tracks. These things are gonna try and stop you hitting your goal but you just gotta move forward, don’t let it bother you or set you back.”

Also including previous summertime singles, One Way Ticket and Do What I Wanna, Spencer’s youthful take on life that happens around and to him and his friends, cut to sounds inspired by long-term loves including Arctic Monkeys and The Beatles, is spread across all five tracks on his first EP. Joining those singles is yet-to-be-heard, but needs to be heard to be believed crowd-pleaser, Waiting For The Change.

The full EP, with track listing confirmed below, will be available via all usual digital outlets as well as on limited edition CD, available to buy from www.alexspencermusic.com

Gathering accolades on the streets that he knows best, including picking up the support of Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, since setting out with his guitar to perform in Manchester city centre as a child, Spencer’s fearless exploration of his potential gathered pace following his signing to Modern Sky (home to artists including Miles Kane, Lottery Winners and Brooke Combe) at the turn of the year. Gigging upwards, including bookings at major events like the inaugural Beyond The Music celebration in Manchester, the rising artist enjoys the on-stage company of a prodigious band of equally young, enthusiastic and talented musicians.

Following the release of his debut single with the label in April, media interest circled and his music was broadcast to the world via BBC News’ Tik Tok and he became the first musician to perform on Sky Sports’ Good Morning Sports Fans show. With live sessions and playlisting with influential Manchester radio station, XS Manchester and airplay with John Kennedy’s influential Radio X, X-Posure show plus BBC 6 Music, his impact has been instant and the ripple effect is set to grow yet wider as 2024 promises more solo live dates, festival appearances, support slots and new music.
