ALBUM REVIEW: Shit Present - What Still Gets Me
I first discovered Shit Present in around 2021 from another band's Spotify radio and became obsessed with 'Anxious Type'. Noticing they'd not put any new music out since 2016 I assumed they must have disbanded so when we started getting news items detailing new music from the band I was beyond excited!
'What Still Gets Me' is the band's debut album following 2015's self-titled debut EP and 2016's "Misery + Disaster" EP. The album features 5 previously released singles.
Shit Present are one of the most authentic, relevant bands around today. The themes of "What Still Gets Me" largely focus on unwinding mental health, inward struggles and daily battles within the mind. Blasting with feelings of hopelessness, confusion and diminishing self esteem. They also tackle the bemusement of love and the idea of being lost in your own life.
Delivered in a passionate melodic garage punk style their sound is bold, brash and in your face. Iona's vocals are perfectly raw as she rages about her innermost demons. Their deconstructed, back to basics style is gripping and gritty. Loud, raucous combined with plodding and pensive while quieter moments show vulnerability and nervousness. Their words delivered like a smack in the face, a relatable eye opener to anyone who's ever struggled with their mental health.
Shit Present have laid themselves bare on "What Still Gets Me" pouring every part of their being into the record, resurrecting all their darkest thoughts and presenting one of the most unashamedly honest sets of lyrics written. They're like a voice in the dark who understands what you're going through because they've been through it too. The sound track to anger, the melody to tears and the ultimate fuck you to the internal monster that sometimes become overbearing.
"What Still Gets Me" is a powerful, emotional listen while also being catchy, hook heavy, blasting with killer riffs and booming drum tracks. I cannot speak highly enough of this record.
