ALBUM REVIEW: Ho99o9 - SKIN

I’ll start off by being honest this record isn’t going to be to many peoples taste, not because it’s bad but because it’s quite niche. While it’s sounds can be likened to many bands and fits across many sub genres, Ho99o9 are metal and a very experimental kind at that.

It’s loud, it’s distorted, it’s angry and obnoxious…...Ho99o9 are angry and they want to make sure everyone knows it! SKIN is basically all your worst nightmares in one record!

There’s elements of Horrorcore, nu-metal, rapcore, Hip-hop and electronica. While listening I found myself thinking certain tracks sounded a bit like bands such as Coal Chamber, Angelspit or Devildriver however as a whole I’m unable to compare SKIN to any other artist I know.

I will admit that whilst I like metal, Ho99o9 aren’t really my thing, their style is a bit too experimental for me. I’m a lover of Slipknot so am definitely not adverse to some scratching, distortion and shouting but to me this record didn’t flow, nothing seemed to fit together quite right and I found it a hard listen. Maybe that's a sign I’m more of a casual mainstream metal fan.

Tracks Slo Bread and Dead or Asleep felt more accessible, the former a much calmer example of hip-hop or rapcore while the latter offered a more traditional screamo part sung, part shouted sound.

To conclude, if you're a true metalhead who is passionate about everything to do with the genre I recommend you give SKIN a go but if that’s not your bag I’d probably say give this record a miss, it’s not for the faint hearted or easily disturbed!

SKIN is out now!
