Deer Tick have released 'If I Try To Leave', the final single previewing their anticipated new album 'Emotional Contracts' –produced by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Spoon, Sleater-Kinney)- out this Friday 16th June via ATO Records. The first-ever co-write between John McCauley (vocals/guitar) and Ian O’Neil (guitar) arrives alongside an Ian Stroud-directed video that parodies “how-to” videos on the internet, featuring questionable culinary delights courtesy of Farideh Sadeghin.

The buzzing track, partly inspired by the warmth and grit of Keith Richards’s solo records, builds a sublimely bombastic backdrop to the song’s lucid self-revelation, illuminating Deer Tick’s undeniable gift for twisting melancholy into something glorious. “The overall theme of this song is family and how I’ve come to rely on it,” explains McCauley. “I need my family as a grounding force in my life. My survival depends on it, and I like it that way.”

To celebrate the album, the Providence, RI-based band just launched a playful new hotline, where fans can dial-in for previews of their new album: 1-833–DEER-TCK  “If I Try To Leave” follows the flourishing radio-hit “Forgiving Ties,” which debuted as the #1 most added track at AAA radio, and “Once In A Lifetime,” which earned praise and support from Brooklyn Vegan, SPIN, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence, Relix, and more. Emotional Contracts, named one of Vulture’s Most Anticipated Summer Albums, is available for pre-order here.

'Emotional Contracts', the band’s ATO debut and first new work since 2017, adds an even greater vitality to their feverish collection of timeless rock-and-roll and features guest musicians like Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, as well as background vocals from singer/songwriters like Courtney Marie Andrews and Vanessa Carlton. The LP catalogues all the existential casualties that accompany the passing of time, instilling each song with the irresistibly reckless spirit that’s defined Deer Tick for nearly two decades. Mostly recorded live–and honed down from nearly 20 songs to a concise, thoughtfully curated ten–the album is Deer Tick’s most collaborative to date, and sees all four members operating at their peak songcraft powers.

Before heading into the studio with Fridmann, the four-piece spent months working on demos in a perpetually flooded warehouse space in their hometown, enduring the busted heating system and massive holes in the roof as they carved out the album’s 10 raggedly eloquent tracks. 'Emotional Contracts' fully echoes the unruly energy of its creation, ultimately making for a heavy-hearted yet wildly life-affirming portrait of growing older without losing heart.
